About Richard

I am a saxophonist with over 10 years performing experience in New Zealand and the United States. I have a passion for teaching and I have previously taught privately and in high schools in New Zealand. I cover a wide range of styles in my lessons from classical, pop to jazz. Lessons are tailored to suit the needs of the student. All ages welcome. It's never to late to take up the saxophone.

I specialize in jazz improvisation, theory and harmony. I like to emphasize the study of jazz music in my teaching pedagogy because I believe it is relevant to the 21st century saxophonist. For beginners I also focus on basic music theory, aural training and musicianship.

I also offer lessons in jazz arranging and composition for advanced students.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you are looking for fun, productive and rewarding music lessons.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I teach music composition with an emphasis on jazz and other related contemporary music styles.

I have advanced knowledge of Finale and Sibelius notation software. I use these applications to teach concepts and ideas related to composition.

I have studied jazz arranging and composition at the Bachelor's and Master's levels. My portfolio includes arrangements for big band and original compositions for small jazz ensemble.

Saxophone

I currently hold a M.M (Jazz Performance), PG. Dip (Jazz Performance) and B.M (Jazz Performance).

From 2015-2016 I maintained a private studio of 5 saxophone students from beginner to advanced level.

I have previously worked as a contract tutor for the Young Musicians' Program at the New Zealand School of Music and also the New Zealand Jazz Foundation Jazz Workshop 2016.
