About Irina

I graduated from University of Pittsburgh in 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in General Studies. During my undergraduate course of study I worked as a tutor at the University Learning Center. I tutored college students who were taking ESL courses.

While they were working on compositions they needed help with grammar. Some of the things we worked on were building up a sentence (word order).

I also volunteered for the Jewish Community Center in Pittsburgh. I taught English to adult Russian immigrants. In addition, I led conversation groups with them.

For the last seven years I’ve worked in the After School program in Flatbush area of Brooklyn. This program is for elementary school children who come after school for an extended day program.

We help them to complete their homework assignments. Many children in our program are English language learners from Haiti. The subject areas that they need help with the most are reading and writing. We read together with them to make sure they understand the content. Then we give them a written homework assignment after each reading to see how much they remember from it. We also have a book club where we discuss their favorite books in small groups.

Over the years I developed my teaching methodology from teacher’s trainings and hands on working experience. When we meet for the first time I’ll ask you about your language background and your future goals. You may be interested to learn English for every day conversation or your goal could be to pass a TOEFL exam for college. Once we identify what you are hoping to accomplish from your lessons, together we will create a plan of study.

Your plan of study will include basic components which we are going to work on (reading, writing and conversation. We will keep adding new lessons under each component. So your study plan will have a separate reading section which will include only reading lessons. The writing and conversation sections will be separate with their own lessons.

Overall each lesson should have specific goal which will reflect your individual interests.
During our lesson I will introduce you to a new topic first. Together we will do some examples which will demonstrate the new concept. While we do our example exercises we will be reviewing the main ideas behind the new concept and hence filling the gaps you may have.

At the end of each lesson I will give you completed exercises with the wrong answers. While looking back at similar exercises that we just finished together you would be able to find mistakes on your own and correct them.
In my lessons besides textbooks I use visual aids like picture dictionary, scholastic board books for children, games and puzzles to motivate my students to learn. Books that come in large print and have many illustrations will quickly capture your attention in the first place. Moreover, seeing things makes it easier to remember, especially for children.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I graduated from University of Pittsburgh in 2002 with a degree in General Studies. I took courses in linguistics and childhood education in order to gain an insight into the world of teaching. From 2002- 2010 I’ve worked at Brain Balance Learning Center for children with learning disabilities. I assisted children who have been approved for Individualized Education Plan. From 2010 – 2014 I worked for an after school program. I worked with K-6 children on homework assignments in ELA and math.
