About Alex

***My Experience***

In my 10+ years as an educator and tutor I've worked one-on-one with dozens of students on test prep (SAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, GRE, GMAT, and Regents), academic subject support (math, physics, chemistry, and Spanish), writing, and college application coaching. My students range in age from 10 to 50 and come from diverse educational backgrounds.

I graduated magna cum laude in English from Harvard University, and I have a master's degree from Columbia University, where I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the department of Physics.

I'm also an internationally-published writer: I contribute to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and elsewhere, and I've written an award-winning book. I love helping people with their writing and used to teach it at a top Upper East Side private high school.

***My Philosophy***

You're smarter than you think you are — and I'm here to prove it. Research has shown that there are 7 different types of intelligence, and that the most effective educators are those who customize their approach to the unique strengths and learning styles of each student. Informed by modern developmental psychology and the latest research in the science of learning, my tutoring is designed to unleash your unique inner genius. I believe that with the right tools and the proper guidance, anyone can achieve — and exceed — their goals. I'm here to help you unlock the powers of your own mind — because when you do, anything is possible.

***My Results***

My students regularly gain admittance to the most prestigious academic institutions in the world: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Brown, Berkeley, Columbia, University of Chicago. They routinely improve their SAT scores by 300+ points and their ACT by 4+ points. Students who are struggling in school boost their academic performance by several letter grades. Many of the writers I've coached have gone on to publish professionally. Seeing the people I mentor make such great strides is, for me, the ultimate reward.

***My Scores***

On the SAT Math, Reading, and Writing, I scored 800. On the SAT Math II, I scored 800. On the ACT, I scored 35. On the GRE Quantitative Reasoning, GRE Verbal Reasoning, I scored 800 and on the GRE Writing, I achieved a 5. My Physics GRE score was 840. On the AP Calculus BC, AP Physics B, AP Spanish, and AP Literature tests, I scored a 5.

Thanks, Vivien! GRE reading comprehension is a challenge even for native speakers, let alone someone whose first language isn't English, so your rapid progress is all the more impressive. MIT will be lucky to have you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

With the right coaching, anyone can become an Algebra 2 wizard. Let me help you unlock your inner math genius.

Calculus

As a Columbia-trained physicist and former physics instructor, I LOVE teaching calculus. (After all, calculus was invented to solve physics problems.) Let me show you the beauty and magic of this subject and — most importantly — how to MASTER it like nobody's business.

English

I have a degree in English from Harvard University. Let me help you take your verbal skills to the next level.

GRE

My goal is to help you do what I did: get a perfect score on the GRE.

Physics

I am an Ivy League trained astrophysicist.

Study Skills

A key component to success on any exam and in any academic subject is having the right study skills. This will save you a great deal of time and energy. When I taught physics at Columbia University, I helped students with their study strategies in a class setting as well as in "help room" sessions. And I have extensive experience tutoring students in academic subjects such as physics and mathematics, which require a rigorous set of study skills that go hand-in-hand with knowledge acquisition and problem-solving techniques.

Writing

I'm an internationally-published author and journalist, and a professional editor. My writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Harper's, and elsewhere. I regularly edit professional authors and love the process of helping other people hone their work.
