University of Southern California (English)
A lifelong learner, I graduated cum laude from USC with a major in English and Poetry, and a minor in Spanish Language and Literature. I received a top-notch education in several countries - I attended a British prep school in Hong Kong as well as University in the Basque Country in Spain. An ardent student as well as teacher, I have a fondness for school, homework, and advancing one's skills - I am always teaching myself several musical instruments and genres as well as languages and other hobbies. A professional musician as well as a poet, I fell in love with teaching several years ago while conducting violin workshops in Port Townsend, WA - sharing my knowledge, learning from my students, and helping foster a love for learning is one of my greatest joys.
Let me help you, challenge you, and engage you or your child! With my broad array of interests as well as my penchant for performance and my grasp of language, I can command a student's attention and even make their learning a fun experience to look forward to.
I have been tutoring Spanish privately for 1-2 years, and find it extremely enjoyable, satisfying, and fun. I am of Hispanic heritage and have an almost-native fluency in speaking, reading and writing Spanish, have attended the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain as well as High School in Malaga, Andalucia. As a poet, I write in both Spanish and English and have a strong knowledge of grammar, syntax and vocabulary. My approach to teaching Spanish includes a wide variety of stimuli; within our lesson time, conversational Spanish is a priority, with careful and patient emphasis on conjugation of verbs and vocabulary; once a base is established, I expand a student's interest and exposure through explorations of Spanish language music, film, and literature.
Homework and quizzes are an essential part of the curriculum, as language can only be learned if practiced frequently and throughout the week. Every effort will be made to stimulate the student through assignments that are interesting, enjoyable, and challenging to the individual in their particular level.
I have been writing poetry and novellas from the age of 5, and have always been an avid reader. My knowledge of other languages (French and Spanish) and my years of experience learning foreign vocabulary and grammar has prepared me very well to teach English as a second language. Furthermore, as a literature major and professional writer, I have a personal passion for writing, and feel especially fulfilled when I can pass this love on to a student who needs it.
As a college student, I graduated with Honors - my essay-writing skills are among my biggest strengths, and as someone who has considered becoming an investigative journalist, my penchant for fact-checking, clear and concise sentence structure, and pithy arguments serve me well as a writing coach.
As a math tutor for middle and high school students for the past 1.5 years, I find ways to explain concepts that may facilitate learning more effectively. I have had several students in the past with math and learning disabilities, and work very well with them; possessing an extremely high degree of patience and creativity when it comes to finding a way around roadblocks is a very useful skill of mine. I can work with the common core curriculum or, if the situation calls for it, I can enhance whatever natural abilities the student may already possess; many who struggle with common core, even those with math disabilities, are able to successfully approach math from a different perspective that is not successfully nurtured in a classroom setting.
I hope that I am able to help you achieve your goals, and I look forward to hearing from you.
