UMass Amherst (Mus Education)
Playing and teaching music is what I do and love! My main instrument is trumpet, I've been playing for 17 years now, grew up as a classical trumpet player, but now have accumulated experience in jazz, musical theater, and reggae. I have many years of experience playing in orchestras. In the past four years as a freelance player I also began playing in many musical theater pits, I took up improvisation lessons, and started playing in two local reggae bands in the Boston area. I received professional training through UMass Amherst as a Performance Classical Trumpet student, as well as received my initial teaching certification in music education.
I have experience teaching all ages of students. At my last employment I taught many elementary students beginner piano, as well as middle school students beginner trumpet. While attending UMass I taught private lessons at Springfield Central High School, to high school students whom were at all skill levels. I teach all ages music theory and ear training as it relates to playing the instrument.
I take teaching very seriously, but at the same time like to have fun during my lessons! I am very open minded with my teaching in knowing how a student learns best. I try to maintain a healthy respectful relationship, where I am not only teaching, but also learning from the student. Regarding materials, I provide various resources pertaining to skills the student needs to focus on, or the student wants to accomplish!
I specialize in Trumpet playing. Received my Bachelors in Music from UMass Amherst, met all requirements to teach general music. I have experience teaching basic music theory, ear training, and piano.
I am always looking for new students to teach in any area of my skill set! Please contact me any time to set up a lesson. My schedule is pending at times, however most lessons are taught after 3pm during the week or Sunday afternoon/evening. My base rate is $70/hr, which is usually extended by 15mins. more or less depending on the lesson. If you are looking for a tutor for ages 10 and under I definitely recommend scheduling half hour lessons, which would be $40/30mins. Playing and teaching music is what I do and love! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have received extensive tutoring and thorough understanding pertaining to tonal theory and the ability to hear and sing pitches. I understand and comprehend teachings in fixed DO and movable DO. I prefer to teach fixed DO, as notes will always correspond to a particular syllable. Throughout a lesson, interval exercises, melodic passage, harmonic passage, and chordal exercises are executed depending on the student's level. I am a big proponent of McGamet Ear Training software as a student aid. I would also use the student's instrument as an aid to connect pitches to their instrument. Ear training is not only listening but a using imagery to connect with the sounds. Each ear training lesson would consist of exercises, in which the student would further practice at home with study materials that I would provide. As ear training is directly related to music theory, theoretical concepts can be taught as well in order to have a full understanding (based on a student's level).
I received four years of classical piano training and have taught beginner piano for two years to ages 5-14 at a private music school (Marblehead School of Music). I use mainly the Bastien Method series, however I have used Suzuki and the James Thompson methods as well. I combine personal scale and interval exercises with the method books to build finger strength and some basic theory understanding (scales, chords). I also incorporate short pop songs or etudes (based on student's interest) to practice learning longer pieces of music and build personal music repertoire.
I have received an extensive amount of training on the trumpet for 17yrs now. Trained originally as a classical trumpet player, I am now able to play and teach jazz and musical theater based playing. I have about 10 yrs playing experience with youth, college, and community based orchestras. About 6 yrs playing experience in jazz settings. I base my teaching method off of multiple resources, such as the Arbans Method, Schlossberg Method, and Clark Studies Method. I incorporate varied scale exercises, range, and embouchure building exercises (buzzing/long tones). Singing is also a large proponent in my teaching. All lessons are based off a student's interest and ability, which corresponds to particular exercises and methods that are used.
