About Paul

Hi :)

I'm primarily an artist with an extensive performance background, but I've also spent the past decade teaching in a variety of fields (ages 9-18). I graduated from UCLA with a theater degree and have been performing and touring professionally ever since which has given me the opportunity to meet and work with so many people from all over the world. For three summers I served as the Music Director at TASIS (The American School In Switzerland) where I taught kids from around the world in music and language. Additionally, I have privately coached improv, piano and voice lessons both in LA and NY.

Academically, my strengths are in writing, reading, public speaking and computer skills. I believe a good teacher must not only know their subject but must also know their student. I'm a 'people person' and love to create a comfortable, positive environment so my students can feel safe and willing to learn. The traditional model of school was often challenging for me, so I like to utilize different ways of thinking to arrive a solutions. Every student is different, so I work with each individual's strengths to help guide them on their own journey.

As an actor and writer I have studied and performed texts from every era and have a strong grasp not just on the technical aspects of language but also on what it takes to elicit intentional and engaging thoughts in both the written and spoken word.

I'm a writer and have been using Word for close to two decades. I am good at typing with a high WPM.

Traditional tutoring has not always been my forte, but I bring a unique perspective to education that encompasses learning as a lifeskill, not just a way to memorize lessons and pass tests. Learning is a lifelong process in which academic success is supported by human engagement, emotional intelligence and creativity. I want to help people improve their skills and build confidence in learning overall.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

Music is what I do, and what I am. I've been singing since the age of 5, playing piano since 8, composing since 13, arranging since 16, and performing professionally now for the past 15 years. I'm trained in voice and piano, am learning guitar, and have a home studio where I record and produce music. I hold a music/theater degree from UCLA and co-produce performance events in Brooklyn. I know music theory and am well versed in a wide array of genres.

Piano

I began learning piano at age 8 and have been playing ever since. I've worked professionally as a pianist/accompanist in both LA and NY for 15 years, accompanying several cabarets, musicals, ceremonies and private events. My experience includes: playing aboard Disney and Princess cruise lines, touring with music/comedy duo Dakaboom, and composing/MDing productions at TASIS (The American School In Switzerland). Currently I play and produce events in Brooklyn.

Public Speaking

I did speech/debate in high school alongside doing theater. I studied theater in college (UCLA's School of Theater, Film & Television) and have been performing professionally on stage and screen for over 15 years. Having also coached improv, I know that standing and speaking in front of a crowd takes confidence and a settling into that confidence and can offer insight and exercises to help students find that in themselves.

Songwriting

I have written and co-written many songs in the past twenty years, some for myself but most often for shows or groups I've been a part of. My music-comedy duo consists primarily of music that I have written, arranged and performed for thousands of people across the country. With a background in musical theater and over 15 years of professional performance experience (accompanying myself on piano and learning guitar) my songwriting continues to grow and evolve in theatre, pop/rock and jazz standard genres.

Theatre

I hold a degree from UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television where I studied not just acting, singing and dancing, but also lighting, costume and scenic design. I've written and directed plays and currently produce performance events in Brooklyn, NY. My knowledge of theatre history and its prominent figures is extensive and I have connections to Broadway actors, musicians and producers.

Voice (Music)

I hold a degree from UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television where I studied musical theater. I've taken private voice lessons since the age of 13 and have been privately coaching my own students for the past ten years. I have been singing in a variety of styles my whole life beginning in elementary school, including: choral, barbershop, musical theatre, jazz, a cappella, pop/rock and standards. My group Sonos was signed to Verve Records and I currently tour with music/comedy duo Dakaboom.
