About Justin

Originally from the Home of the Blues and the Birthplace of Rock n Roll: Memphis, TN, now based In Brooklyn, I am an active woodwind doubler on saxophone, flute, clarinet, and world flutes. As a performer, I have played a wide variety of styles and venues. I am versed in classical, jazz, rock, soul music, musical theater, and more. I have performed with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the Memphis Jazz Orchestra, backed touring artists like the legendary Dr. John. I spent time playing on cruise ships with the B.B. King All-Star Band. I have played over 20 musicals in the last couple of years. As a teacher, I have taught private lessons for about 9 years. In addition, I have taught master classes, coached honor band clinics, taught college theory classes, worked as marching band staff, and conducted bands.

I love music and I love getting others to love music as well. I have taught music to students of all ages and all levels and I understand the importance of tailoring lessons to each individual student's needs so they are able to achieve whatever they want to do, whether that is to pursue a career in music or just to learn an instrument as a new hobby. My goal for students is to give them the fundamental skills necessary to be successful as a player and to teach them how to practice effectively on their own. I want my students to be excited about learning new things and to gain a better appreciation for all types of music.

I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and a Master's Degree in Multiple Woodwind Performance on Saxophone, Flute, and Clarinet. I have experience teaching everyone from beginner's to college music majors.

If you want to improve your playing, your music reading, your ear, or anything else, please contact me! I would love to help you along your musical journey!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Clarinet

As a clarinetist, I have studied with Dr. Robyn Jones, former Principal Clarinet with the Louisiana Philharmonic. In addition to being a regular player for musicals and other gigs on clarinet, I have played clarinet and bass clarinet with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, and with the University of Memphis Wind Ensemble. I have taught lessons and clinics for clarinet students and help them excel in sound and technique.

Ear Training

I hold two degrees in music. As a Graduate Assistant during my Master's, I taught level 2 Aural Theory (Ear Training and Sight-Singing) to undergraduate music majors as a part of their required curriculum. We covered identifying and singing intervals, chord progressions, melodic and rhythmic dictation, sight-singing solo and in harmony, transposition, playing piano and singing, and more.

Flute

I have had the wonderful opportunity to study flute with Elise Blatchford, soloist and member of the award-winning quintet City of Tomorrow. I have performed countless gigs on flute and other woodwind instruments and taught students beginner through advanced. I love to help young flute players discover their own sound and explore the wonderful expressive potential of the instrument.

Saxophone

I have a Master's Degree in Woodwind Performance, studying Saxophone, Flute, and Clarinet and a B.M. in Music Education. I actively perform on all instruments and have taught privately and in group settings for nearly 10 years. My students have placed highly in honor bands and received scholarships to college for music.
