About Deborah

Hello! I am Deborah, I am a Franco-American educated painter. I have studied Art history, drawing and painting in both France and the United States, and have travelled all over Europe to visit as many art museums as possible to pursue my art education. I have been a passionate artist since before I can remember. I began seriously studying drawing and painting at age 14 in Paris, France, where a great draughtsman said to me: "Il faut rentrer de l'intérieur," "you must draw from the inside out." This phrase has informed my practice, passion and skills ever since because it perfectly describes the binary experience of making art. The two sides of art are skill, being able to draw from the inside of the form to create the image, and passion, being able to bring what you are feeling from within into clear view on the paper.

My experience in art education although great has at times left me wanting even more, which has made me incredibly passionate about helping young/new artists find a path, a voice and strength in their abilities. I believe that with a concentration in figurative drawing, an understanding of one's personal taste in art throughout history, a lot of practice and a determined passion for greatness, anyone can become a great painter. As a tutor I would love to be able to help form artists, by supporting the psyche and developing the skills that are needed in the practice of art. I believe that inspiring is a form of teaching. Over this past summer I have spent the majority of my days at the Louvre museum in Paris copying Da Vinci, Titian, Michelangelo and others. What I have found almost equally enriching has been the children who have sat themselves right next to me and watched me draw for up to 20 minutes or more and have been completely captivated by my living example of the process of art. This experience has reinforced my desire to be an example for younger artists and has also cemented my belief that I have something to give through teaching. I take Art incredibly seriously, it is not a joke, it is a practice concerning the human condition, for people who love to observe and feel the lives and emotions of others through empathy and vision.

I have been studying art, specifically the skills of drawing and painting for the last 12 years of my life. I have a degree in Illustration from Parsons School of Design, where I learned how to promote my art, and what to expect from a corporate art job. However, I began my studies at L'Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Montparnasse, Paris. The Grande Chaumière Academy is world renowned, amongst its alumna include Amedeo Modigliani, Tamara de Lempicka and Louise Bourgeois. There I learned how to draw from within and began to form myself as a painter. After college, at Parsons, I returned to France where I spent a six month intensive practice at Les Beaux Arts de Paris. At Les Beaux Arts I studied advanced figure drawing, and gestural painting. Being an artist-painter is a lifetime practice, which is why I moved back to New York City where I now continue the unending and invaluable study of painting and drawing at The Art Students League of New York. The Art Students League is an Atelier school, where students spend anywhere from 3 to 12 hours a day drawing, painting, and or sculpting, with a bi-weekly critique from instructors. Finally, having received all of this training has given me the confidence that I can share my knowledge and begin teaching new artists who are as hungry to learn!

My paintings are most often portraits, and when I have time, space, and funds I prefer to do very large-scale full figure portraits, one might relate these to Lucian Freud and Alice Neel. I also practice still-life and landscape but I have always found the portrait and figure to be of the most interest to me, most likely because I was deeply moved by an exhibit of Da Vinci's work when I was 10 years old. After this exhibit I had officially decided/realised that I was an artist-painter. finding a closeness with the model, whether you know them or not is of the utmost interest to me as a painter, I want to see them from my deepest self, I want to be able to bring something of their soul, of their character, of their present self onto the canvas. this is what I seek in my work, and I believe that I could help others find their personal art-voice and help them to develop it in their work.

I would love to help build portfolios for college, aid in improving drawing skills, help you to find your voice/style through art historical discussions, or help you begin the practice of oil painting! Please get in touch with me to discuss what kind of tutoring you are looking for, be it college prep, helping you through a thesis project, finding something that has been missing in your education, or simply a private art instruction!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
