About Mia

Hello and welcome to my tutoring profile!

I'm a part-time professional tutor offering private lessons in Math and Piano. I recently graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a concentration in Economics and Math. During my year of study abroad at the University of Oxford, I specialized in advanced mathematics and achieved a 3.9 GPA.

In the past 5 years, I have taught students aged from 5 to 25 and many of them see dramatic improvements in their grades and confidence levels. I focus on general math but specialize in test prep. After a quick conversation and a general evaluation, I design customized classes to fit the needs of the students.

1) For younger kids, I come up with fun and creative teaching methods to stimulate their learning interests.
2) For students who need help with homework and general math taught at school, I concentrate on tackling difficult mathematical concepts and questions.
3) For students preparing for tests, I not only clarify answer keys but also design study plans with the students to help them achieve optimum scores.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Discrete Math

As a student majoring in Economics and Mathematics, I completed discrete math in college with an A. I excelled in the class and have been tutoring the subject for the past year.

When teaching the subject, I focus on explaining abstract mathematical concepts in a simple and clear way. I often use specific examples and graphs to help students understand topics like set theory, probability, and combinatorics. I'm particularly skilled in counting techniques and writing proofs. Over the years, I have developed very clear step-by-step directions to help students write perfect proofs.

Piano

I started to practice piano when I was 4 years old. I've been taking private lessons with world renowned pianists from the Juilliard School, Royal College of Music in London, and Yale School of Music. I officially began to give piano lessons when I was in high school and since then I've taught elementary and middle school children, college students majoring in music, and adults who want to start a new hobby. I hold prestigious awards from national and international competitions.

Patient and helpful!

Mia clearly explained topics to me. I have a lot of trouble with statistics and she made it approachable and worked slowly with me to ensure I understood what I was doing and could do problems on my own.
