About Melissa

I am 24 years old and I am currently obtaining my Master's in Education. I have experience working with children from ages 1-17, in a classroom and daycare setting.

After finishing undergrad, I joined City Year New York. Working with a seventh grade class in the South Bronx helped me to realize how important education was and how much I enjoyed working with students. During that time I followed the class to their ELA and Math classes working with small groups and sometimes tutoring students one on one.
Last year I worked with Blue Engine, a non-profit education company, in a 9th grade algebra class, helping to plan lessons and working with small groups. The goal of the program was to reduce the student to teacher ratio and to prepare students to not only get into college, but to also experience success once they got there.

I love helping students to realize the potential and to know that it exists within themselves, and they only need help uncovering it.

I was a TA in a 9th grade algebra classroom. My duties included leading a small group through their work, helping to plan lessons, running after-school tutoring and regents prep.

I have experience working with ELL students in understanding text in a seventh grade classroom as well as helping students with Special Needs in reading and writing while working with City Year.

I helped to lead and run an intensive regents prep course for students taking the Algebra 1 common core regents exam.

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions and to schedule a lesson.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I helped to teach Algebra 1 in a 9th grade classroom. The students in the classes I worked with achieved a pass rate of about 60%, with about 40% of them achieving a college ready score of 73 or above.

Reading

I have experience working in a school setting helping students with reading and writing in small group settings as well as one-on-one tutoring.

History and writing — She taught me my equator and she taught me how to estimate how much because there was no exact answer and for my writing she helped me with my similes and my metaphor and helped me with my answers but did not tell me the answer she helped me get to my answer ...
