About Lia

I make sculptures with glass panels to build open or closed boxes, filled them with broken or cut glass and sometimes I add organic elements. I used to paint the glass superimposing several layers and use it as a canvas. That way of using the glass enabled me to express the depth I was looking for in painting, but as I got familiar or intimate with the material, the edges, the variety of thicknesses and the quality of transparency, the material itself began to speak in its own voice. Not only allowed me to see through the multiple layers, the context becomes part of the work as the work become part of the space.

I was thrilled as I still fascinate with the reflections/projections when it is crossed or hit by natural or artificial light, the way it transforms a three-dimensional work in a 2D projection -in the floor or walls, creating different ephemeral compositions as time passes.

I am also an artist in residency with Studio in a School in New York City public schools and daycare centers. My main focus is in Early Childhood teaching collage, painting, printmaking, clay and wood sculpture. Responsibilities include curriculum development, meetings with principals and faculty to connect content to Common Core Learning Standards, set up the program headlines as well of writing unit plans. I lead professional development workshops for school teachers and the school community and -as part of a new residence offered by Studio to schools and kindergartens, I am coaching teachers to implement art centers as a daily practice, as well as training citywide teachers in the Studio HQ Office.

And as part of the residences I curate and display students artwork some of whom have been selected by the program directors and exhibited in annual exhibitions at the Christie’s Gallery.

As an artist my aim is the creative process itself, the internal and external discoveries and as teacher my intent is to offer this, the curiosity and tools to explore it.
Thank you!

Much love,
Lia

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam.
