About Jay

Although my career is acting, I have been teaching and tutoring for more than five years now, in areas as free-form and creative as theater education and as goal-oriented and time-sensitive as test prep. I love all kinds of knowledge, right brain and left brain alike. No matter what I'm teaching, my philosophy is to share that joy in knowledge with my students, to provide a sense of confidence and mastery. I want them to love learning, not fear it.

In addition to a BA in Theater (Dartmouth College, 2010, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and an MFA in Acting (Case Western Reserve University/Cleveland Play House, 2016), I have been teaching theater, especially Shakespeare, for years. Most notably, for the past five summers I have been helping run a nonprofit summer theater called MaineStage Shakespeare, which includes in its mission a commitment to sharing theater education with local kids by means of a summer camp, Shakestars. My depth of experience as both actor and educator gives me the tools to teach theater to novices and experts alike, in areas ranging from advanced dialect to basic stage confidence.

As an actor and writer, I have a deep affinity for language, communication, and creativity. But I also have a talent for mathematics and the hard sciences. I use my wide interests to form connections with students of all kinds. Many students know they need to plunge into subjects with which they aren't comfortable, but are afraid to take the leap. I can help students to bridge the gap to material outside their comfort zone by comparing it to subjects they like and understand. In a sense, I can be their interpreter or guide as they venture into unexplored territory. With more advanced students, I have the experience and depth of learning to perfect their approach and to help them discover new connections.

If you're looking for a teacher with a wide base of knowledge, an ability to make unexpected connections, and a talent for clear communication, please contact me.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
