About Jack

I'm Jack. I study the theology of Karl Barth at Union Theological Seminary in New York, NY. I earned a B.A. in biblical and theological studies at Regent University in Virginia Beach. I am also the Secretary-treasurer of the International Society for Heresy Studies, and an intern at St. Lydia's Lutheran Church.

Additionally, I am a musician, with a particular affinity for folk and electronic music. I also love movies, particularly old ones, foreign ones, and artistic ones. I have a lot of interests, and I somehow generally find the time to engage them all.

I have studied many philosophers in and out of school, including Nietzsche, Hegel, Kant, Marx, Augustine, Heidegger, Kierkegaard, and more. I have also presented a paper on Nietzsche's critique of Christianity at the Research in Religious Studies conference at the University of Calgary.

I actually majored and minored in biblical studies at Regent. In addition to fulfilling the amount of required credits in biblical studies, most of my electives were also in biblical studies. I have also taken 3 graduate courses in biblical studies, including a class on Hebrew. Additionally, I have done quite a bit of personal academic study of the Bible, and am well-versed in a wide range of biblical topics. Finally, I should also mention that I presented a paper on the theology of the book of Jeremiah at the Society of Biblical Literature international conference in Vienna, Austria, and have also presented papers on the the Bible's ethics.

In my education at Union and at Regent, I have encountered a wide range of studies in religion, including the history of the category of religion, the rise of secularism, the history of the Christian church (Protestant and Catholic), and more. I have also encountered academic research in sociology through critical theorists such as Marx, Adorno, Horkheimer, Foucault, Du Bois, Cornel West, and others.

I have been an avid film-watcher my entire life, staying up to date with new films that come up, while also watching films as old as the 1910's. I have also written several essays on film analysis and am well-versed in many different film genres, directors, time periods, etc.

I am excited at the prospect of tutoring here in NYC! Please contact me for more information, be it scheduling, subject queries, academic achievements, etc.
