About Susan

I love learning, and have been involved in teaching and learning for most of my life. I began my teaching career in California public schools as a bilingual (Spanish/English) 5th/6th grade teacher.

What I loved most about teaching at this level was the creativity and natural intelligence of the students -- and creating double the fun with two languages. After teaching for 7 years, I decided to return to school for master's and doctoral degrees in International Systems of Education and Policy Studies.

At the time, my daughter was 14 years old, and we traveled to southern Mexico to interview students, their parents and their teachers on bilingual (Spanish/Mayan) education. We hiked the mountains, interviewing participants in a mix of Spanish and Tzozil, a Mayan language, getting to know the people, making tortillas by hand on a comal, picking corn in the steep mountainside fields, roasting fresh picked peaches by an indoor fire pit, where the mom of the family cooked tortillas. With all this knowledge in hand, about life and education in Mayan villages, we returned to the U.S. where my daughter resumed schooling, and I taught undergraduate and graduate classes in education, diversity, research, and educational leadership.

Since I had incorporated art and creativity into everything I had done, for example, my students wrote well researched plays and children's books instead of final papers, others who wrote formal final papers, added video or poetry to their work. Many of them published their work in academic journals. And since I was doing more arts-based qualitative research than ever, I traveled to San Francisco to get a degree in Fine Arts. My specialty is New Genres, specifically installation and performance art, and I have shown my work in Mexico, San Francisco, and New York. After art school I taught art at the college level, along with English, Writing, and College Success Strategies. Here again, my favorite part about teaching is the students, the way they grow in learning, empowering themselves through learning creatively.

I listen carefully to my students, listening for what they need and want to learn, listening for how they learn, and for what specific ideas will help them learn better. I listen first, so I can provide individual actives and materials that will respond to their learning needs.

I have lived in Mexico, and have presented my research on Mexican and U.S. education at professional conferences throughout Mexico and the U.S., in both Spanish and English.

I would love to meet you and work with you, as you tackle new subjects, and find joy in learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a life time teaching credential from the state of California. I taught in public schools in Thermal and Santa Maria, California, and I substituted in public schools in Santa Barbara, California.
