About Colleen

I'm Colleen B. and I have a love of learning that I like to share with my students. I have been an adjunct lecturer of chemistry labs at the collegiate level, as well as a tutor to students in math and science ranging from middle school through college. As a current graduate student, I am able to relate to my students about the rigors of schooling as I am going through it myself. As a professor, I really take the time to make the questions and problems students encounter into something tangible that they can relate to. Math and science can get very abstract, and it helps to bring concepts that are more manageable when dealing with things that seem outside of ones comprehension. I really enjoy helping students with their challenging problems and seeing the "AHA" moments happen.

My teaching approach is through guided learning. I don't give answers to problems directly, instead I facilitate their problem solving and help students arrive at the answers on their own. It is a challenge at first, but the skills built through this method help improve the students problem solving and translates to all other areas of their schooling.

When it comes to math, I think all problems are more like puzzles, but with letters and numbers. Teaching students how to utilize the systematic approach to solving math problems really helps them improve their math skills very quickly. A challenge for many students is not knowing where to start or what to do with the information provided them. I like to breakdown the problem and help setup students to approach each new problem with a clear set of tools to conquer it. Not only have I tutored math at the middle school, high school, and collegiate level, but I also have a math minor from my undergraduate institution.

I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in chemistry and have my B.S. in chemistry. Along with my time working in the chemical industry, I have almost a decade's worth of chemistry experience. I have worked and studied in the academic and industrial chemistry realms and am wanting to share the knowledge I have acquired. I have taught and tutored chemistry at the collegiate level and have strengths in general, organic, inorganic, nanotechnology, and radiochemistry. I also really enjoy teaching high school and middle school chemistry. The foundations of science are so important and I love making science accessible to those that feel it is out of their strengths. When you are prepared with the right tools to tackle a problem, science isn't a burden anymore, but a strength. I have the tools and love sharing the methods that I've learned to be a chemistry superstar with my students.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have taught chemistry at the college level in the classroom before, and have tutored many students in the subject as well. I am currently working on my PhD in chemistry so I have fresh working knowledge of the subject matter.

Really great tutor! — Colleen was very passionate, knowledgeable and patient. She explained titration so well and so simple, a concept that I really struggle understanding, but now it's more clear and I understand it better. ...
