About Lizzie

Discounted rate for any students located along the F train line in Brooklyn ($45/hour for 2 hours minimum weekly)

I am Lizzie! I am a certified special education teacher, general education teacher and literacy specialist. I am trained in OG (Orton-Gillingham) approaches to teaching decoding, utilize various program to help students with comprehension (including Lindamood Bell Visualizing and Verbalizing), and specialize in helping students with math challenges utilizing hands-on and manipulative approaches.

During my many years of working with students with various needs I have learned how to approach each student in a way that will most benefit them. I am patient and organized. I love to make learning fun for my students - your child will not be doing worksheets the entire time. I bring games and other activities to keep my students engaged the entire time they are with me. This ensures that they are not just learning a lot but also enjoying themselves while they are learning. Motivation is a very important aspect of learning and knowing how to motivate my students is one of my greatest strengths.

As a certified special education teacher I look at students with math challenges in a different way than many other teachers. I have extensive experience in taking apart the difficulties a child might be showing in math and figuring out what the problem lying behind those difficulties might be. What looks like an issue with understanding addition might in fact be a memory issue, or an organizational issue (child is not lining up their work properly, causing incorrect answers). I approach each child's challenges from multiple sides to ensure that they will be successful.

I am a certified Literacy Specialist. As part of that I received extensive training on working with students struggling with any literacy aspect - whether reading or writing. I have training on using various literacy programs to help children with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, organizational issues, phonics struggles, comprehension challenges, and many other subjects.

As a special education teacher I have experience working with kids struggling with various issues - from dyslexia, to ADHD, to processing disorders. I will do an assessment and work with any IEPs or other current documentation that your child has to find out the most appropriate strategies for success.

I love teaching. There is nothing that makes me happier as a teacher than seeing a child growing in their skills and confidence. That is the reason I became a teacher (after working in advertising) and that is also the reason why I would be a great fit for your child. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I am a special education certified teacher. I have taken classes at Bank Street College (as part of a Masters in Education degree) on how to work with students with special needs, including those with ADD/ADHD. I also have and had various students in my class who have been diagnosed with this category on their IEPs. I have worked with these students to manage their needs as related to their diagnosis. I also continue to keep up with research on this subject and read relevant publications.

Common Core

I am a certified elementary school teacher with experience working within the Common Core standards since they have been introduced. As part of this work I have changed existing school lesson plans and programs to better fit the requirements of the Common Core standards. I have experience preparing children for the Common Core tests both in ELA and mathematics.

Dyslexia

I am a certified literacy specialist. I received my degree after studying at Bank Street College of Education. As part of those classes we studied students that present with dyslexia-like symptoms and the many ways that these students can be helped. I am also aware of various programs that can help students with challenges in this area.

I am a certified elementary school teacher. I currently hold three New York State certifications: as a general elementary school teacher, as a literacy specialist, and as a special education teacher. I work with children in all elementary subjects but specialize in reading (both phonics and comprehension) and math.

Elementary Math

I am an elementary school teacher with an additional certification as a special education teacher. As such I am trained in various approaches to teaching math to students who are struggling in this area. Additionally, many students with math difficulties have them due to difficulty in comprehending math word problems. As a certified literacy specialist I am also specifically equipped to help children better understand what they read- including word problems.

Phonics

I am a certified literacy specialist. I received my degree after studying at Bank Street College of Education. I have taken extensive classes on teaching students with reading and writing difficulties. As part of those classes we studied phonics in detail - both the subject itself as well as various methods of bringing this knowledge to students who may struggle with this subject. I am also aware of various programs that can help students with challenges in this area.

Reading

As a certified Literacy specialist I have extensive experience working with children helping them improve their reading and writing skills. I have training in various approaches to phonics and decoding words, in various comprehension techniques, and also different ways to improve a child's writing ability - both spelling and content. I received my literacy specialization from the Bank Street College of Education here in New York - one of the most respected teacher education colleges in the country. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach for teaching students with dyslexia-like symptoms reading. For students with severe comprehension difficulties I am able to use programs such as Visualizing and Verbalizing, as well as other approaches.

Russian

I am a native Russian speaker. I grew up in Moscow, Russia until I was 10. I continue to only speak Russian with my family that lives here (no English allowed in the house) and also extensively with my family in Russia. I have been told over and over that I do not have any accent while speaking Russian. I have extensive teaching experience that I can use to help students learn Russian.

SAT Reading

I am a trained and certified Literacy specialist. As such I am trained to teach students to successfully approach all literacy tasks - including standardized tests such as the SAT! I am able to impart to my students a variety of strategies that will allow them to confidently tackle complex reading passages as well as writing tasks. I will work to diagnose the student's exact needs and work to boost those elements that they are struggling with, while capitalizing on their strengths to get them the best SAT reading score they are able to get.

Lizzie was very nice. My son seemed to take to her right away. We just had our first session but I felt comfortable and confident that she can help my son.
