Hi! My name is Lizzie and I am an elementary school teacher. I hold 3 New York State certifications, an elementary certification, one as a literacy specialist and a third as a special education teacher. I have experience tutoring students with reading and writing difficulties, as well as those who struggle with elementary math concepts. During my many years of working with students with various needs I have learned how to approach each student in a way that will most benefit them.
I am patient and organized. I love to make learning fun for my students - your child will not be doing worksheets the entire time. I bring games and other activities to keep my students engaged the entire time they are with me. This ensures that they are not just learning a lot but also enjoying themselves while they are learning. Motivation is a very important aspect of learning and knowing how to motivate my students is one of my greatest strengths.
As a certified special education teacher I look at students with math challenges in a different way than many other teachers. I have extensive experience in taking apart the difficulties a child might be showing in math and figuring out what the problem lying behind those difficulties might be. What looks like an issue with understanding addition might in fact be a memory issue, or an organizational issue (child is not lining up their work properly, causing incorrect answers). I approach each child's challenges from multiple sides to ensure that they will be successful.
I am a certified Literacy Specialist. As part of that I received extensive training on working with students struggling with any literacy aspect - whether reading or writing. I have training on using various literacy programs to help children with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, organizational issues, phonics struggles and many other subjects.
As a special education teacher I have experience working with kids struggling with various issues - from dyslexia, to ADHD, to processing disorders. I will do an assessment and work with any IEPs or other current documentation that your child has to find out the most appropriate strategies for success.
I love teaching. There is nothing that makes me happier as a teacher than seeing a child growing in their skills and confidence. That is the reason I became a teacher (after working in advertising) and that is also the reason why I would be a great fit for your child. I look forward to hearing from you soon! Hi! Lizzie was very nice. My son seemed to take to her right away. We just had our first session but I felt comfortable and confident that she can help my son.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
