About Julia

As a first-year M.A. student at the New School for Social Research, I'm familiar with student life and the pressures it entails. However, I am also well acquainted with the satisfaction of learning new skills and gaining new insights. As a tutor, my goal is to help students enjoy learning and develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that they will need to learn independently.

While I was an undergraduate at Wofford College, I volunteered as a math and spelling tutor for first-graders. I also have experience tutoring science at the elementary level and writing at the college level.

I work with students to set concrete personal goals and make a plan to achieve those goals. If we're working on a specific class, I'll use your class assignments in tutoring sessions in order to ensure that tutoring sessions fit into the your curriculum, but will also provide supplemental assignments as needed to ensure that you get enough practice developing each skill. If you're not in a class and just want to practice your English, get feedback on your creative writing, or practice another subject, we will tailor the curriculum to meet your needs.

I am generally available for tutoring sessions between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and also have some night time availability on occasion--just message me and we will find a time that accommodates you! My base rate is $35/hour and I offer discounts for regular students.

If you have any questions or would like to talk about booking a session, please don't hesitate to message me!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Science

I earned my B.S. degree in Psychology and have taken Physics and Biology (including Genetics) at the college level. In high school, I was a regular science tutor for a fifth-grade student.

English

Raised by an English teacher mom, I was brought up with a high standard of verbal and written communication. I worked as an English teacher for elementary through high school students in Mozambique on a volunteer basis, and also have experience editing college-level essays for grammar and content.

ESL/ESOL

Raised by an English teacher mom, I have been brought up with high standards when it comes to verbal and written expression. That being said, I have also been a student of other languages and understand the struggle that comes with learning a new language. I have taught English as a second language to elementary through high school students in Portuguese-speaking Mozambique on a volunteer basis, and I am committed to helping both native-speaking and ESOL students express themselves more precisely and fluently.

Literature

My passion for literature comes from a love of reading and storytelling. During all four years of high school, I was involved in a theater group that performed Shakespeare's work exclusively, and I have also studied early English literature in college. Whether you need help navigating the early modern English of Shakespeare, you want to know how to break poems into their component parts, or you just need help learning to read, I would be happy to share my love of literature with you.

Psychology

I graduated summa cum laude in Psychology from Wofford College in December 2015 and have plans to earn my Ph.D. in Social Psychology. As a psychology major, I was involved in numerous research projects which included learning research with pigeons, human factors research on distracted driving, and independent research on relationships between nonprofit organizations and their beneficiaries. I have experience helping students develop their ideas in research papers as well as editing for grammar and content both in a formal setting as a research assistant and informally as a peer tutor.

Sociology

I have taken three sociology courses during my undergraduate career: Social Research, Poverty Analysis for Socioeconomic Development, and Social Psychology. I also took a Social Psychology course in the Psychology department; the approach to the subject differed by department, but much of the subject matter overlapped. As an Intercultural Studies (ICS) major, my sociology courses were a major part of how I approached and understood cross-cultural research.

Writing

In college, I majored in two writing-intensive subjects: Psychology and Intercultural Studies. I have experience with technical, analytical, and creative writing and have worked as a peer tutor helping other students edit essays for grammar and content.
