SUNY Empire State College (Education)
My name is Christine, I am studying Education with a concentration in Childhood development. I will receive my degree in August and will be certified to teach by next September. I have 3 years experience working with children 3-4 years old teaching a kindergarten prep class for Gymboree and am very comfortable and knowledgeable with early childhood development and learning. I have been working as a paraprofessional for one year, working one on one with students with special needs and know the common core learning adjectives. Throughout high school and college I babysat for a family of four children their ages ranged from 4-16 and have helped them all with homework. My knowledge for education, learning styles and patience makes me easily approachable and able to help those students in need.
I am extremely knowledgable in all elementary studies such as phonics, reading, handwriting, science, math and social studies. I am also able to help junior high and high school students with their english and writing.
Knowing the basis of math is vital to success in math. While tutoring I will review all basic math logic to determine the root of the problem. Once the root of the problem is detected I will use my knowledge of teaching strategies to help make the information relatable and understandable to the student.
I am very familiar with the common core standards, the different methods that are used to teach these standards as well as the reason as to why these are the standards. With this knowledge I will be able to teach common core in an easy way that makes sense to the student.
I have experience student teaching elementary and pre school science and handwriting. I have a full portfolio of my science experiments done with children from ages 2-5 where they learn the importance of logical thinking, observation and the scientific process. I have worked with many students who have had fine and gross motor delays and know several ways to help build these skills to help with handwriting.
Phonics is my strongest subject. There are several methods I know to help teach students their vowels, blending words, letter sounds and sight words.
My approach to learning is fun and hands on. I will relate student's interests to the learning material to help it make sense to the student and to make each tutoring session as fulfilling and enriching as possible. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
