About Steven

I have a Master's degree in ESOL, Education from the College of Santa Fe in NM and a BA in Journalism. I also hold an ESL certification and have experience teaching grammar, writing, reading, and speaking courses in the United States and abroad. I began teaching English language classes to elementary students in New Mexico while attending graduate school. I then taught middle school and high school students in Syracuse, New York, as well as in South Korea.

I have been teaching for over 15 years and over the course of my time teaching, I have properly prepared students for the TOEFL and the SATs, while making students feel more comfortable with speaking, reading, and writing in English.

Although I am most experienced teaching English language learners, I also have experience helping all students with their essay writing and reading skills. I have worked closely with high school students in need of assistance with their academic writing skills, including editing of the college application letter of intent and personal statement. I am also able to make younger feel more confident with writing through positive reinforcement and purposeful materials most suitable for the level of the student.

I will provide an interesting and educational curriculum for a purposeful lesson. With my instruction, the student will be able to see their improvements based on predetermined objectives. I will discuss lesson plans with the student and develop a plan most suitable based on their learning goals. Learning English is challenging for students of all ages. I will do my best to make the journey of overcoming language barriers an exciting one.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
