About James

I am a former PhD student in political science with more than four years of teaching experience in international politics, American foreign policy, security studies, and political economy. I also have substantive experience teaching college writing in my courses. I averaged a 4.5 out of 5 on my official university teaching evaluations, and I received a letter of commendation from the Divisional Dean for the Social Sciences at the University of Washington for exceptional teaching.

Before moving to New York City, I passed PhD qualifying examinations in international relations, comparative politics, and political economy. I also finished a master's thesis on the role of costly signaling in international politics, and have received advanced training in statistical inference techniques and tools. Beyond elementary statistics, my formal training includes regression analysis, maximum likelihood estimation, and the use of the Stata and R statistical computing languages.

I also received my Bachelor's of Science in Economics with a focus in international macroeconomics. As a graduate student, I worked on multiple projects that explored outcomes in international monetary politics and political institutions, including an in-depth analysis of the role of the gold standard and its relationship to the Great Depression, and the relationship between institutions and macroeconomic policy in the European Union and the 2008 European Financial Crisis.

I strive to cater my teaching to the learning styles and needs of individual students. I am committed to your gaining proficiency in the subject matter, and also providing you with the tools to continue excelling in the subject in the future.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Political Science

I have a M.A. in political science and passed Ph.D. qualifying exams in international politics, comparative politics, and political economy (GPA 3.83). I also have taught over 600 undergraduate students at the University of Washington as a graduate teaching associate, have given multiple guest lectures, and stepped in as instructor of record for the final two weeks of an upper division course in international conflict. In 2015, the UW Divisional Dean of the Social Sciences gave me a letter of commendation for exceptional teaching evaluations. My career averages are 4.5 / 5.0.

Writing

I taught undergraduate courses with intensive writing components (10-20 page research projects, as well as short writing assignments) in political science. Many undergraduates begin college without strong writing skills. So the first few weeks of my courses would include a writing development component. I assigned additional material from prolific writers and teachers (Robert Zinsser, Stephen King's chapter from On Writing, Strunk and White) and developed writing exercises to strengthen my students' writing.
