Hello! I'm an TEFL-certified educator who has over three years of teaching experience during my seven years living in Latin America. I have taught in México, Perú and Colombia. Education is super important to me, as I know it is the basis of personal empowerment. I always develop my own lesson plans for every one of my classes, based on what my students are interested in, what their strengths and weaknesses are and HOW they best learn.
I earned my TEFL certification and left the U.S. after 18 years of diverse experience in the communications design and advertising industry in New York and San Francisco. During that time, I also taught graphic design at San Francisco City College.
In Latin America, I worked as a photojournalist and teacher, and while there I developing two new learning curriculums for youth in underserved communities. I also developed an intensive, creative English workshop for University students, and another for business English students while in Bogotá, Colombia.
Most of my students have been business professionals, but I love kids and have developed a computer-based learning program in Saylla, Perú while working with an NGO there.
I feel its important to personally connect with my students. I want students to feel comfortable in class and to enjoy themselves. I like to teach English through planned activities, like reading, writing, story telling, challenging games and hobbies. For my business English students, I develop lessons based on their professional needs and job responsibilities. When grammar weaknesses come out through our activities, I make lesson plans that focus on what needs to be learned. And new vocabulary is introduced in every class and immediate use is encouraged.
At this time I work full time in a design studio, so I'm looking for students who would like evening and possibly Saturday classes and who can be a little flexible. Weekday mornings are a possibility, too. If no actual classrooms are available, I think a student's home can be a great learning environment—IF we can have some privacy and distractions are kept to minimum. Hello! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
