About John

I expect to graduate from NYU in the spring of 2016 with Latin honors, and subsequently go on to graduate school for a PhD in classical German philosophy. I am a double major in Politics and Philosophy, and also am minoring in the German language. I've lived in Berlin, where I studied at the Insitut für Philosophie bei der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. I have a particular academic interest in Continental philosophy, but have been trained in the analytic tradition. With regard to my political science qualifications outside of academia, I've worked on a handful of political campaigns and have researched telecommunications policy at The Roosevelt Institute in Manhattan. If you need help with any of my core areas of expertise, I am more than willing to sit down and go over whatever you are struggling with.

Here is some information about my background:

Philosophy is my primary area of study at NYU. I have written and studied ethics, Nietzsche, and the intersection thereof. Additionally, I've studied philosophy in Germany. I have a comprehensive understanding of the major issues in philosophy, as well as a specialized understanding of Nietzsche, Kant, Hegel, Marx, and Freud.

Politics is my second major, which I've found to be very exciting. I keep up with politics by reading the New York Times on a daily basis, and I have a thorough understanding of American government. Also, my past work experience has been in political campaigns and at think tanks, so I have a professional understanding of politics and government as well.

My tutoring approach is one that I think works quite well; I aim to find where my students are struggling and work with them to develop the skills necessary to improve as such. If there is no clear, distinct area in which they are struggling, I tend to holistically evaluate my student and provide general guidance until a sticking point is reached wherein the student gets stuck or is otherwise unsure how to proceed. I am a fan of critical thinking on my students' part, but not to the extent of leaving them hanging. Moreover, I understand that not all students are the same, and where some struggle, others do not; I adjust my tutoring method accordingly. My past tutoring experience comes from having tutored individuals who know me either first-handed or via word of mouth. I have tutored in all of the subjects discussed herein, and have done so for quite a few individuals.

Because my primary areas of study are heavily predicated on the ability to convey complex ideas and theories in written form, my entire academic experience has been one centered around proofreading and writing. Moreover, it is not rare for me to be asked by friends and family to proofread and/or help with writing assignments.

Don't be a stranger and shoot me an email if you think I can help you with anything! I'm fairly funny and very friendly, so don't hesitate to get in touch if you need any support with your studies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Writing

I am in my last year at New York University and my areas of study require impeccable writing and editing skills.
