About Mariah Rachel

Hello! My name is Mariah and I graduated from Wesleyan University (CT) in May 2015 with a degree in English and Film Studies. I grew up in Philadelphia where I attended The Miquon School and Friends Select School. I continued my education at Wesleyan where I pursued a liberal arts, oxford-style curriculum with concentrations in poetry, screenwriting, photography, and cinematography. I have spent time living in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Connecticut, Madrid, and New Orleans. I am currently working part-time at a documentary company in Manhattan and am looking to continue my work as a tutor!

I have worked with students in many, many different capacities over the past 10 years- each experience offering new insight on my ever-evolving views on education. I was brought up in very progressive schools. I believe that learning is a highly individual pursuit and what works for one student may very well not work for another. With this approach in mind, I like to focus the first two sessions with a student on our getting to know one another. Rather than asking what a student is having trouble in, I begin by having them explain to me what they are studying (areas of strength and areas requiring improvement). I have found a lack of confidence to be at the root of many common middle and high school academic struggles. A student being able to explain and demonstrate where they are having trouble is half of the solution.

In high school I volunteered in a life-skills class at the William H. Hunter School, an elementary in North Philadelphia. This taught me how to interact with 10-15 children simultaneously while also executing a highly specific task. It also offered me experience working with special needs children ages 6-10. During my time in New Orleans, I worked extensively with a 7th grade student. Our sessions were 3 hours and we met 7 days a week. Our main focus was improving her organization and confidence in all curricular subjects (English, Algebra, Biology, Social Studies, and Religion). Our sessions began with the student breaking down her goals into long-term and short-term lists, organized by subject. During our time together I saw a significant improvement in her performance as well as an increase in her enjoyment of what she was doing. I have since worked with over 10 students in New Orleans and Philadelphia. Each of my students have seen improvement in their grade performance and left with a sense of accomplishment.

Subject Qualifications:

I majored in English at Wesleyan University and have always excelled in writing and reading comprehension. In high school I scored a 740 in writing on my SAT. At Wesleyan I focused my studies around writing workshops 10-12 person critiques under the guidance of a visiting writer. I took Techniques of Poetry, Advanced Poetry, Writing Short Fiction, and Writing Lives (memoir). My senior year I produced a 30 page chapbook of poetry under the guidance of poets Elizabeth Willis and Thomas Sayers Ellis. I feel that my experience makes me a competent tutor at the middle school, high school or collegiate level.

My mother was born and raised in Havana, Cuba and I grew up listening and speaking Spanish with my family. I spent 6 months living and studying in Madrid, where I took courses taught entirely in Spanish. My fluency makes me an competent tutor at the middle school, high school, or collegiate level.

I graduated Cum Laude from Friends Select and excelled (A- or higher) in Biology and Advanced Biology. While I did not pursue these subjects at the collegiate level, I feel qualified to tutor middle or high school level science. At Wesleyan, I pursued both Sociology and Psychology, taking a total of 3 credits of 200 level courses or higher between the two.

I am also an avid photographer and am currently the in-house photographer for a magazine based in Philadelphia. I use Adobe Photoshop on an almost daily basis and would love the opportunity to show someone interested in learning the craft the ins and outs of the program.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have! I look forward to working together.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Sociology

I feel that I am qualified to teach sociology at the middle school or high school level. I received a B+ in Sociology from Wesleyan University during my sophomore year.

Very patient and excellent teacher

My son was so excited about the work they did together. He is already understanding the work much better, feeling comfortable enough to do the work on his on. I look toward to further working with her to help my son thrive in math.
