About Chulhan

I have tutored students of all ages, from 8-40, and I particularly specialize in writing, reading comprehension, and grammar for the English language at the middle school to undergraduate levels. I also have experience in tutoring SAT's, ACT's and other such standardized exams. My students have found success in immediately improving their grades by a full letter or more, and my SAT/ACT students have always seen their scores improve by leaps and bounds.

While I place the utmost importance on teaching the writing fundamentals (grammar/syntax, etc.), on the other hand, I also strive to provide the context of why these rules are important, and how they are applied. In doing so, I seek to foster a students' critical thinking skills, rather than just relying on pure memorization. Every student learns efficiently in their own unique way, and by equipping students with critical problem solving skills, I seek to help students maximize their learning potential for their academic career.

I studied Comparative Literature at Northwestern University, concentrating in Musicology and Critical Theory. I have also earned perfect scores on both the ACT English and ACT reading exams, and a 2340 aggregate score on the SAT's.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I studied Ear Training for 12 years, both at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege and Northwestern University Bienen School of Music.

Music History

I studied Music History for five years, both at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege and Northwestern University Bienen School of Music.

Piano

I studied Classical Piano Performance for 18 years.

Public Speaking

I studied Public Speaking during my middle and high school years, and entered numerous competitions on Scientific research presentation. I was also the publicity chair for the Korean American Students Association at Northwestern University, and gave multiple public presentations on cultural and political issues annually.

Study Skills

Throughout my teaching career, as a tutor (English Literature, Writing, Reading, ELA, Music Theory, Ear Training, Music Composition) as a martial arts instructor, and even as a piano instructor, I have found that the common element to success has always been in positively structuring your commitment to a topic of interest.

First, is to find a key motivation of studying, whether it be grades or personal ambitions/desires.

Second, is to then seek expertise in adopting a proper curriculum of study in that topic/subject, such that your efforts are both efficient and engaging (this is where tutors are essential).

Third, is then to find the discipline to maintain your level of interest and adherence to a schedule (this may often be the most difficult aspect of studying, and one that should not be underestimated).

And last but not least, you must understand your own physiological needs--the body and mind requires rest and knowing when to work hard, and when to play hard, is an essential aspect to any excellent student.

My experience as a student of multiple disciplines at top institutions such as the Manhattan School of Music and Northwestern University, places me in a unique position to assist any student of learning in a good position to excel in any type of study.
