About Daniel

My love for education comes from a lifelong curiosity born out of questioning the unknown. Learning how to solve problems by one's self is an important lesson to obtain over the course of one's education. Encouraging students with the proper tools to improve themselves, in addition to helping students figure out how to find solutions on their own, are in large part what have made tutoring and teaching such valuable experiences for me. Having taught in a variety of settings in both my home state of Ohio and abroad in rural villages of Rwanda and Nicaragua, I can attest to the difficulties faced both in understanding foreign languages and applying foreign concepts. My success in these scenarios, however, came through dedicated trial-and-error tailoring my instruction to varying needs, as each student's strengths differ.

I specialize in teaching the social studies, English, grammar, and Spanish. Regardless of the lesson topic, my hope is that after each lesson the student comes away with a newfound understanding of the material. I intend to challenge students, but not to the point where they may become burdened or overwhelmed by the material. Homework assignments should be engaging and relatable, and as such I feel that assignments should be kept relevant to the students interests while still challenging their ability. Understanding information is not enough, being able to contextualize concepts is what makes topics both interesting and memorable. I try to do this in every single lesson I teach. I like to maintain consistency through periodic evaluations, progress reports, and feedbacks as it is another crucial part to improving my teaching and gauging the impact with each student.

In terms of certification and work experience, I have received both a Cambridge International Training Certificate for the Introduction to Cambridge Primary and the Introduction to Cambridge Secondary. Further, I have over three years of teaching instruction in a TOEFL/ESOL setting in Rwanda with the United States Peace Corps and at a Cambridge University International School in Rwanda's capital, Kigali. Prior to living in Africa, I received my B.A. in Spanish. As a requisite of that degree I spent over one year living alone in Santiago, Chile, as well as traveling to various other Spanish-speaking countries. In the time since graduating from undergraduate studies, I have gained over two years' experience of consecutive interpretation both in Spanish and in Kinyarwanda (the language of Rwanda).

I look forward to working with you and helping you to achieve success in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology from Denison University. I studied both fields extensively while in undergrad, as well as taking some of those skills with me while studying abroad and also into my Master's degree. I fulfilled a research requirement by writing a +100 page thesis, which involved primary research on my topic of land and identity rights in contemporary Santiago, Chile.

Bodybuilding

I currently pursue weight training and fitness exercise five to six days of the week. On my off-time, I read and peruse fitness literature regarding the topic and supplementary information regarding health benefits and training modalities. I have a deep-set personal interest in the field and great passion for physical improvement.

English

I taught creative writing to middle school students, and taught high school English for over three years. Further, I am studying my Master's in International Relations at NYU where I currently have a 3.8 GPA. Let me know how best I can help you.

Fitness

I currently pursue weight training and fitness exercise five to six days of the week, which revolves around gymnastic strength training, heart rate cardio training, and dedicated stretching 3-4 times per week.

Martial Arts

I studied Tae Kwon Do for eight years, however, in times passed, during elementary school. I continued studying until I received my first-degree black belt. Though, some time has passed I still remain active and vigilant with my health.

Soccer

I grew up playing soccer in both middle school and high school. In Junior year of high school I became a diligent athlete in the off-season and joined a club team in the surrounding Cleveland area. Thereafter, I was selected for my undergraduate University's varsity team where I played for a season and a half until injury shortened my varsity career. I continued to play through college at the club level and still maintain the sport in my off-time to this day.

Spelling

I have two Cambridge certified teaching certificates, and I am a graduate student at NYU. I currently am studying International Relations. I have spent four years in Rwanda, Africa, where I taught ESL at the primary level for two years; then, in the capital I taught English, Creative Writing, and Phonics at a Cambridge International Academy at the high school and primary level.

World History

I am currently a graduate student at NYU studying International Relations with a focus on Human Rights. Previously I lived in Rwanda with the US Peace Corps and studied abroad in Santiago, Chile as the only foreigner at the University where I studied. I also have an undergraduate degree in Sociology and Anthropology.

I have four years of teaching experience in Africa with the US Peace Corps and a Cambridge International School. In that time I also tutored some of students on the side to help augment their studies. Prior to living in Rwanda, I tutored elementary school students near my undergraduate university.
