About Dolly

Hello!

I'm Dolly! I'm a motivated young lady who moved to NYC 5 years ago to attend the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies. Since becoming a Certified Movement Analyst, I've been working one on one with individuals with movement concerns as well as dancing professionally. Last year I completed yoga teacher certification, which has been a real pragmatic application for my Laban training.

I am at the type of learner/teacher who very much enjoys the process of the lesson. If a muscle seems stiff during a yoga pose on the first day, then feeling it relax into the body over the course of a week is gratifying. In the same way that connecting the events to of our past to the world we live in today is illuminating and rewarding.

My academic interest has always been history. Since AP European history in high school, I've loved the past stories that have made our current world what it is today. I have a degree in History from Drew University. In fact, by the end of my undergrad and graduate training all my independent projects were on dance history, because that's the culture I live in and I love understanding how it came to be. My Laban thesis was a historical analysis of tap dancing in America, as a result of Black and Irish Americans co-mingling in the 19th century and influencing each others movements. Learning how to understand history has helped me better understand other subjects. Science for example made so much more sense after studying science history. I believe it is a really powerful subject, that gives context to everything.

I've been dancing for 23 years. My first love was ballet, and I would not have the refined motor skills, open posture, muscle memory and graceful carriage I have now. I greatly believe that the more we move as young'uns, the more able bodied we will be as adults. It's also a beautiful art form, that I would be honored to bestow to the best of my ability (which is beginner to advanced)

Reach out to me if you want to be tutored with enthusiasm and expertise. I can't wait to meet you!
