About Jacqueline

Who am I?

I am a French tutor with six years of experience in New York City and Paris. I received a BA in French Language and Literature from CUNY City College of New York. As part of my degree I also studied at L'Université de Paris Est-Créteil Val de Marne.

What sort of students do I teach?

Elementary to college level French students who are seeking to supplement their formal coursework. Adult learners who wish to gain or refresh their language skills for travel, work, or simply for the reward of learning something new!

What will sessions be like?

Your sessions will vary based on your language goals and current level but will generally consist of a mix of grammar exercises and conversation practice while exploring different pieces of French media and literature. If you are using these sessions to supplement another course we can accommodate your syllabus and incorporate any texts or films being analyzed in it. For independent learners we will use a free online textbook to work on grammar and vocabulary while using French media to supplement your learning process.

Why multimedia?

While we might not all be able to travel abroad to get a true immersion experience we can easily access countless resources created by and for French speakers right at home. This exposure to authentic use of the language produced by French culture is much more facilitating when it comes to developing a natural understanding of the language than grammar exercises which often focus on forced and rigid-sounding dialogues. Through the use of other materials I find it is easier for students to become engaged in the subject and to use their language skills in a larger diversity of situations. Studying these with a tutor not only gives students plenty of opportunities to ask questions but also allows us to engage in genuine dialogues about the things we have seen and read - great practice if you hope to make French-speaking friends!

Anything else?

Yes! In general I will aim to provide you with any resources that you will need including review sheets, transcripts for audiovisual materials and access to flashcard sets that can be viewed on your mobile device. I'm also friendly, passionate about teaching and an all around awesome person.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

She explained the lesson plan well and I like how we will progress through a syllabus. It's not haphazard but well thought out. Enjoyed it very much. Thank you, Jacqueline. Look forward to working with you.
