Hello everyone! I'm Julie. I'm a NYC-based professional tutor, specializing in test prep, math instruction through multivariable calculus, and reading comprehension.

For the past 6 years, I have helped students excel in their math courses and achieve higher scores than they had previously thought possible on the SAT, ACT and graduate admissions exams. I see test prep as an opportunity for intellectual growth, and my work as a teacher is fundamentally about empowering my students.

To achieve those life-changing score increases that enable students to get into highly selective universities, you need a tutor who deeply understands the psychology of test-taking and can reshape a student’s entire approach to standardized tests. This is the type of test prep I have been trained in and am excited to show you.

My background:

I was handpicked and trained by the owner of a major Manhattan test prep company to tutor the SAT. Training with this company has taken various forms over the past few years, including:
• a two-year mentorship with a veteran tutor who bills over $1000/hr
• an intensive, six-week program for improving reading comprehension
• monthly meetings with other tutors to critique videos of each other’s sessions

I have also taken on several leadership roles for the company. Last year, I led a seminar on the best math materials to improve SAT scores—and will lead another one in a couple weeks on GRE tutoring—and I have taught SAT classes at Chapin’s, Saint Ann’s School, Packer, and Grace Church.

At this company, I have become known for my work with high school students who have severe math anxiety. I am well aware of the way that high school math instruction can alienate and create a life-long fear of numbers and quantitative thinking. One of my greatest joys as a tutor is enabling students to overcome this fear and feel inspired by their ability to learn math and become better problem-solvers.

I see my role as tutor as a blend of teacher, trainer, and coach, which means I care as much about minds

GMAT,

GMAT

The GMAT is one of my favorite tests to tutor! I have worked with many people who have their sights on top business schools but have not done algebra or geometry in many years. These students often need to take a 40th percentile score to a 90th percentile one. To accomplish this, much more than haphazardly going through practice problems is necessary. This approach leads to an incomplete, superficial understanding of concepts that won't enable students to tackle the hardest questions on the test. To make sure my students understand the math in a deep, lasting way, I scaffold concepts over a period of weeks, building complexity at the right pace for each person. This means that two months later they can still rely on their knowledge of the topics we've covered together. I also emphasize what I like to call "discomfort training." The GMAT does not allow skipping and coming back, which means students get one shot at problems and have to quickly work through any intimidation or frustration they feel. Make no mistake—this is a deeply psychological test. I love the challenge of helping students overcome the mental and emotional blocks to performing at a high level, and I'm always amazed by how people can surpass their own expectations.
GRE

GRE

The GRE is my favorite test to tutor! I love helping adults reach their academic and/or career goals by doing well on the GRE. Preparing students for the test involves extensive vocabulary review, advanced reading comprehension exercises, and lessons in creative problem solving. I also emphasize process: skipping and coming back, using scrap paper effectively, etc. When I took the test, I received scores of 168 on the verbal and 170 on the math.

Statistics

Statistics

I believe statistics is one of the most important subjects for every student and working professional to learn at some point. While in high school, I taught myself the material on the AP statistics and received the highest possible score on the exam. I then went on to study statistics for a year at Harvard and have since tutored it to both high school and college students in New York and Boston.

Calculus,

Calculus

I first tutored calculus when I was 16 years old and enrolled in a course at the local university. While a student at Harvard, I completed their calculus sequence and tutored other undergrads. Since moving to New York I have taught the subject to college students at NYU and CUNY and to many high school students. I find it be such an intellectually satisfying subject to teach—it weaves together the notions of infinity and incremental change to give students a new understanding of the world.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

This course is often jarring for high school students—trig is very different from Algebra 2 and these courses sometime jump from topic to topic erratically. I love to give kids a narrative or big picture that helps them tie it all together. I have tutored precalculus students at many different schools (Trinity, Saint Ann’s, Packer, Poly Prep, etc.) and am very comfortable with the variety of approaches to the material that teachers at these schools take. Done right, this course can be fun and exciting!

Amazing Teacher!

Julie really cares and helps walk you through plenty of problems. She is intelligent, patient, and adapts to how you think to help you effectively. Couldn’t pass Calc without her!

Julie is ridiculously effective and incredibly smart

She is someone you definitely want on your team. She knows the material deeply and is able to teach it very well, in addition to diagnosing and understand where you're at. She also helps build up your confidence and pulls out what you already know vs. what you need to know. So grateful to have her in my life.

A tutor with a plan

Julie is very patient and easy to converse with. Right away I knew she had my best interest by the way she started assessing my problem solving abilities. She mentioned her approach and how we will meet my goal by planning and setting a schedule. I am excited to continue working with her.
