I am an art and film professional and Middle School art teacher who currently works with the teaching organization known as Manhattan Youth. Courses that I teach include Mural & Public Art Painting, PhotoShop, Comic Book Art, Animation, and Filmmaking. I offer tutoring for kids and adults of all ages in the New York metro area. I teach techniques such as color mixing, human anatomy illustrating, art philosophy, photorealism, stop motion and 2-Dimensional hand drawn and Flash animations, creative writing with formats including screenplays and comic books, and video production from start to finish. A regular classroom can give a generalized lesson to a group of 20 students, but I can give a personalized lesson that will nurture your talents into that of a professional visual artist.
I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Photography/Filmmaking, but I am also a very accomplished traditional (painting, pen, ink, water color, color pencil) and digital artist. I teach cinematography, photography, and video editing with working knowledge of softwares like PhotoShop, After Effects, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, and iMovie. I have received award for my Cinematography from Columbia University. I am currently producing a comic book series called The Wonderful Wheels, about a paraplegic girl who uses magic books that gives her powers over art and storytelling in comic book worlds.
My philosophy behind all art is to "draw what you see, not what you want to be there." Even Picasso believed in having a firm understanding of the basics before making an abstract depiction of the form, or in other words knowing the difference between making art with or without purpose. "There is no abstract art. You must always start with something." I firmly believe in catering art instruction to your creative ideas, as learning art is a different intuitive kind of learning compared to science, math, and other stuff. Self reliant and motivated attitude is important to succeed in the arts. Whether you are desiring to improve your talents for fun or to gain an edge in the professional market, I can guide you in becoming a well-rounded artist.

John knows the ins and outs of Adobe Premiere, is extremely proficient, and teaches rather than takes over. He is a talented teacher with knowledge about all forms of film making and editing. I would Highly recommend John for film editing/multimedia projects of any sort.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I teach PhotoShop classes at Middle Schools in Manhattan. I have 10 years of experience with PhotoShop. This includes techniques in photo manipulation, character designs, digital illustrating, and graphic design. I know PhotoShop like the back of my hand. I often start my classes by telling my students that they can make anything in PhotoShop. Anything.

I also currently teach Comic Book Art classes as well as other art classes in Middle Schools that include instructions on drawing. Experienced with materials such as pen, ink, colored pencils, water color pencils, and charcoal pencils.
I work in all areas of filmmaking, from commercials and company videos to film sets. I graduated with a degree in Filmmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2012. I won Best Cinematography at the Columbia University National Undergraduate Film Festival 2013 for my senior thesis short film. Working on film sets or getting your own personal film project off the ground requires focus, teamwork, and technical understanding that is quite different from other artistic trades. I would apply those fundamental values in my instructions. Nonetheless, filmmaking is one of the most fulfilling artistic mediums to invest in, as it utilizes skills that are found in various arts across the world.
I have taught filmmaking camps in the past.
