About Raphael

I'm a recent graduate of Wesleyan University in Connecticut, where I majored in Film Studies and English with a concentration in writing. I have been tutoring in various capacities for the past 4 years and worked as a substitute Spanish teacher at Metairie Park Country Day in New Orleans, LA this past year.

I'm an American who spent over fifteen years in Costa Rica, so I am completely native in both Spanish and English. Additionally, I attended a French lycée from K-12, so I am also fluent in French. Having been thoroughly immersed in all three languages, both through my schooling and abroad, I am confident in both my writing and speaking tutoring abilities. I have worked with kids off all ages, as well as adults, in both Spanish, French and English.

Throughout my undergraduate career, I took regular workshop courses where students were encouraged to edit and comment on each other's work, both through class discussion and written assignments. These courses provided a foundation for my tutoring skills, as they required close one-on-one student discussion, extensive feedback (from grammar and syntax to style and form), and above all a desire to support and help other students' academic improvement.

From these courses, I moved on to more official tutoring work, from being a Teacher's Assistant for a Film course to tutoring at my university's Writing Resource Center. While my main experience is working with college-aged students, I also volunteered for a year at Wesleyan's Center for Prison Education, which pairs students and academically driven inmates who have been admitted into a highly selective program that allows them to take courses with Wesleyan professors. It was at the women's prison that I had my most challenging and rewarding experiences as a tutor, as I had the opportunity to work with women from all walks of life and academic backgrounds. Although some of these women hadn't received their high school diploma, it was a pleasure to help them all reach the language and critical thinking skills that were required of these college level courses.

My focus at Wesleyan was primarily in the Humanities. While my major was in English and writing, most of my courses required regular essay writing, so I am very familiar with essay structure and critical analysis. Additionally, my workshop courses have helped me hone my editing and critical feedback skills.

As a Film major at Wesleyan, I was exposed to both films studies and production. I am well versed in all aspects of filmmaking, from writing and direction to lighting, composition and editing, as well as a thorough knowledge of film history and analysis.

As someone who has always been eager and enthusiastic about learning, I am always excited to be working with other students. I am a careful listener and a patient but enthusiastic tutor. Although I mainly have experience tutoring teenagers and adults, I am comfortable with all age groups.
I'm available to meet Monday-Sunday and my hours are flexible. Feel free to contact me with any questions you might have!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Film

I received a BA degree from the College of Film and the Moving Image at Wesleyan University in May 2015. This program included introductory courses in Film History, Action Cinema, Art Cinema, East Asian Film and Melodrama among others. The film studies component of my degree required a extensive analytical essay writing and a thorough understanding of film history of the past century. The film production component of the degree included courses in editing, cinematography, color correction, lighting, screenwriting and directing. The program culminated with a 1 year thesis short film project that put all of these skills to the test. Additionally, I was a Teacher's Assistant for an Introduction to Filmmaking course at my university, so I have previous experience tutoring students in film.

French

I have spoken French my whole life, have studied it in school and college and have over 4 years of experience tutoring students of all ages.

Video Production

I received a BA degree from the College of Film and the Moving Image at Wesleyan University in May 2015. This included over 10 courses in production and film studies.
