About Holly

I recently completed my Master's degree in Music Performance with a concentration in Jazz Performance. Throughout my career at NYU (New York University), I have had the privilege of working with several amazing musicians and professors from Kenny Werner to Mike Richmmond to Don Friedman and Brad Shepik. I participated in several jazz groups including Kenny Werner’s Artist Ensemble, Chris Potter’s Artist Ensemble, Don Friedman’s Jazz Ensemble, and Jean-Michel Pilc’s Ensemble. I studied under Mike Richmmond for Upright Bass studies and under Gil Goldstein for compositional studies. Throughout my career at NYU, I played in several clubs around the New York area including Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe, Cornelia Street Cafe, Nublu, Metropolitan Room, Parkside Lounge, Tomi Jazz, BAM Cafe, New York Times LGBT Events, Symphony Space, Drom, Spectrum, and the Lincoln Center.
At Otterbein University, I graduated Magna Cum Laude with Distinction and Departmental Honors. I was a double major in Music Business and Jazz Studies as well as minoring in Business Administration. Throughout my Otterbein Career, I had several opportunities to teach and also lead. I was president of the Torch and Key Honor Society and Otterbein Future Music Teachers. Through these two groups, I led bi- weekly meetings and created fundraisers. Through Otterbein Future Music Teachers, I put together a “Battle of the Bands” where several rock bands competed for the prize of a studio recording at the school’s recording studio. I created and led several committees and also created recording contracts for the winners of the competition. In Delta Omicron (music honor fraternity), I was the First Vice President. In this position, I created a new recruitment program for people joining the organization.
Also at Otterbein University, I performed in multiple ensembles ranging from Big Band to small jazz ensemble to string orchestra to the Westerville Symphony.

I have been teaching private lessons for six years, from beginning to advanced students, on both guitar and bass. Throughout teaching private lessons, I have dealt with students in several different age groups and different learning curves. I have learned several different methods to teach from these private lessons. My students have done very well for themselves proving that the method I use works. One of my students is currently studying Music Therapy at the college level and received a sizable scholarship for her bass playing. Another of my students, during our tenure, competed at several string competitions and received “1” ratings for her performance. She is currently playing with her high school big band and orchestra, as well as the Youth Philharmonic of Central Ohio.
Besides private teaching, I have also had the opportunity to teach in a group environment through sectional teaching for high schools. I taught sectional lessons at Olentangy High School where I assisted the bass section in preparing for a nationwide orchestral competition. At Bexley High School, I was a camp counselor in charge of the teaching for the extent of their Orchestral String Camp. I instructed the High School section as well as the Middle School Section on their orchestra pieces as well as providing studio group lessons on bow holds, bow technique, intonation, and an introduction to jazz.
I am currently working as the music teacher for the after school organization Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation. I work mainly in low-income schools with Elementary age children teaching them the general education of music. Through this, I have gained more experience in the realm of classroom management and behavior as well as structuring lessons around a specified curriculum. I have been fortunate enough to teach children the basic elements of music and performance through several different world music studies (i.e. Latin American Music, Caribbean Music, African Music, and Chinese Music).
As a teacher, there should be no child left behind because of any economic, social, mental, or physical limits. I came from a background of financial and educational limits from my High and Elementary schools. I had to teach myself to play bass. However, I got into music school, and applied myself to everything I was learning. There are students that love learning and really want to learn, but need someone to believe in them. My teacher at Otterbein University, James Bates, believed in me and gave me the start that I needed. I hope to be that teacher for someone, someday. That is why I teach music and will continue to teach music in the future. I am doing something I love and everyone should have the ability and chance to do that.
