About Debra

Hello Students,
Congratulations to you for reaching out for assistance! That's the mark of a truly dedicated and resourceful student! I am an excellent and personable teacher who can not only help you grapple with the sometimes challenging work you'll encounter in Art History classes but I will also help you develop strategies for studying, learning, and retrieving information for exams. As Art History is clearly an overtly visual discipline, I prefer to teach students with imagery readily available. When we schedule tutoring sessions, be sure that you plan ahead and ensure that you have hard copies of all of the works of art about which we'll talk or that you can access them online.

I have over ten years of teaching experience and truly enjoy interacting with students. I have taught college-level Art History courses, from the lower-level survey courses to upper-level, specialized topical courses. I have also taught Humanities and Western Civilization courses, which incorporate philosophy, sociology, the Western literary tradition, and history. I have taught both on site/on campus and online. Within the discipline of Art History, my area of specialization is European Modernism. That is, art an architecture that was produced from around the mid-19th century into the 20th Century. I emphasized French visual culture and also have minor emphases in 17th-century Dutch Golden Age art and late Gothic period Italian painting and sculpture. As you can imagine, my range of knowledge is thus quite diverse.

One thing that many students find surprising about Art History is that it isn't just about looking at photographs of paintings and sculptures and buildings and offering an opinion: "I like it!" or "I'm not crazy about that!" or "What exactly IS it? I can't tell--it looks like a bunch of squiggly lines to me!" It's perfectly okay to have an opinion but, in Art History, we're digging much deeper. We're asking what influences in an artist's surroundings, from politics to religion to aesthetics and more, prompted him or her to make a work of art and to make it in a particular way. We look at works of art as artifacts of a specific period in time and we learn about them in that context. I will help you to, so to speak, look at the bigger picture, which will include understanding the basic vocabulary of Art History.

I can also offer students assistance with writing. As you've probably learned, you'll do much better in most any class if you can write successfully. It isn't as difficult to do so as you may think and I can assist you in developing writing and communications skills that you can apply to many areas of your life, not only to school.

I look forward to hearing from you and developing an amiable relationship from which we can both learn!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
