About Frances

Hello, I'm Frances!

Thank you for considering me as a tutor for your loved one. I am a published writer and freelance tutor with lots of experience working with children and young adults in educational and creative spaces.

It is important to me that our children stay invested in their education, that they embrace their unique ways of retaining information and excelling- both in the school setting and in the world-at-large.

My tutoring experience began almost 10 years ago as a member of the National Honor Society in high school. Still, my love, appreciation, and thirst for knowledge has been a part of my build since my earliest days in academia. Days of being called a "teacher's pet" paid off as I stayed on the Honor Roll and Dean's List, straight through to graduating Rutgers University with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Media Studies, and with a 3.8 GPA.

My days of tutoring and working with children continued throughout college when I became an after-school and summer camp counselor with the YMCA in New York City's Spanish Harlem. It was here that my ability to connect with children individually while inspiring them to do better in school came to be- with my allowing them the space and encouragement to grasp theories and academic tools on their on terms and in their own unique ways. Furthermore, it was here that I found the confidence to command a room full of young scholars, whether through actualizing lessons plans I'd put together for the group, fun and inspiring crafts, or comfortable homework help. Spanish being my first language has always helped in communicating with some parents and young ESL learners.

I continue freelance tutoring children and young adults I know personally, along with new clients. I remember my days as an elementary school student clearly because it was there that I honed in on my passion for education. My ability to channel younger self, I find, helps children in getting comfortable around me. My respectful and warm demeanor assists those I tutor in opening up to and learning quickly from me.

Along with tutoring, I have freelance experience in managing social media accounts, have been published as an entertainment journalist, and am currently taking steps towards completing horticultural therapy certification.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

After an academic career as an Honor Roll student throughout elementary, middle, and high school, I received a Bachelors degree, magna cum laude, from Rutgers University, in journalism and media studies.

Since then and among many things, I have become a published writer through NYC-based publications and strengthened my tutoring base. Time as a YMCA after school and summer camp counselor coupled with my ongoing tutoring of young scholars keeps me well-versed on the general knowledge and study tactics of the K-6 population.

For almost a decade now, I've tutored scholars one-on-one, in group settings, and on different subjects. My tutoring style includes flashcard making, audible call-and-response, breaking down content, re-reading passages and/or chapters, and understanding the different segments to be retained and the ways in which they relate to each other, and more.

English

I thank my mother for instilling in me a passion for reading pre-birth and beyond. Because of her, reading and writing have been my strongest assets. After graduating magna cum laude from Rutgers University's Journalism/Media Studies program, I went on to become a published journalist via NYC's Metro Newspaper, RollingOut.com, etc. I am saddened by technology's slick way of distracting from the importance of grammar/composition and have made it my personal mission to keep reading and writing alive in our youth.

Reading

I have a Bachelors degree in journalism and media studies from Rutgers University , magna cum laude. Reading has, and always will be, my favorite past time.

I have experience tutoring elementary and high school-grade students in general reading skills. I believe that if given the right materials and techniques, all children can flourish in a love for reading, literature, writing, and more.

Having become a published writer, my appreciation for reading and writing continue to strengthen.

My interest in a variety of reading material, coupled with an honest interest in academic success AND the grooming of fellow readers, makes for an informative yet welcoming reading tutoring experience.

Students can expect to feel as if they've joined an exclusive reading club, with quirky reading and writing exercises, flashcard making, test reviews, call-and-response techniques, and more.

Salsa Dancing

I learned to dance Salsa directly after walking. My grandfather was Fania All Star Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, so I grew up at many concerts, sometimes dancing on stage. This music will always be a great joy in my life.

Spelling

I am a published journalist with an eye for all things grammar and editing. Reading and spelling can be done with the student is encouraged in unique ways.

Study Skills

I was the peer in my group of friends known to be a great studier.

I've assisted children in breaking down content, where we re-read passages and/or chapters, re-do math equations, and understand the different segments to be retained and the ways in which they relate to each other.

Students are encouraged to make flashcards of key charts, definitions, theories, principles, and more. They are taught the importance of hearing themselves use a vocabulary word aloud in a sentence they've put together. They are shown how to plan daily/weekly study schedules per subject, and more.

Writing

I have a Bachelors degree in journalism and media studies from Rutgers University , magna cum laude. As a result, I am a published writer.

I have experience tutoring elementary and high school-grade students in general writing skills. I tap into the form of writing naturally drawing a student and relate it to the school curriculum and/or testing requirements.

My interest of and skill in poetry, creative writing, journalistic writing, study skills, and love of language make for easy-going and inspiring writing sessions. Students can expect quirky writing exercises, flashcard making, test reviews, call-and-response techniques, and more.
