My career has centered on supporting young adults in their academic studies, and preparing them for successful entry in post-secondary education and careers. In my current position as a career counselor at a private high school in Brooklyn, I work with high school students to teach workplace skills and place the entire 12th grade class at a 5-week long internship, where they learn about their career options and interests.
I provide coaching sessions to individuals who are looking to advance their career in the following areas:
- Career Exploration (Career Assessments)
- Resume Building
- Letter Writing
- College Match Search
- Job Search Skills
- Mock Interviewing
Previously as a Career Counselor at South Bronx Job Corps Academy, I oversaw a student’s transition from completing a trade skill, passing the GED exam to assisting with employment search and enrolling at a university or college. I focus my counseling on academic, emotional and behaviors issues to ensure the success of each student. For each assigned at risk student, I provided individual and group counseling once a week, concentrating on conflict resolution, academics, anger management, and self-esteem. Many times I must console parents, teachers and school administrators about students ranging from topics such as bullying to academic excellence.
It gives me great personal and professional satisfaction to watch students transform and realize that they can achieve their personal, professional and academic goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Currently, I am basketball coach for an elementary school. I instruct students on developing the fundamentals and rules of the game with a strong emphasis on sportsmanship and teamwork. My drills include instruction on dribbling, shooting, rebounding, passing, footwork, and court awareness. I love the game of basketball, I played from elementary school to college basketball (Kingsborough Community College) I have also experience coaching Middle School. Making basketball fun and playing the right way is very important to me.
After graduating LIU Brooklyn with an MS. ED. in school counseling I started my career at South Bronx Job Corps Academy as a Career Counselor. My responsibilities were focused on strengthening students employment readiness through social intake, career assessments, mock interviewing, career coaching, resume building, letter writing, job search instructions, and goal oriented planning. After two years I was offered a position at a high school in Brooklyn, as a Career Counselor. During this time I have supervised all career related activities and became head coordinator for the Senior Internship Program, which places all Seniors at a 5-week long internship.
