Oberlin College (East Asian Studies)
My name is Jeremy and I am a recent college graduate, eager to help others, and passionate about education and learning. I primarily offer tutoring in languages: Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, and English as a Second Language; and in Mathematics; elementary, algebra, and precalculus.
I was raised as a bilingual native speaker of Spanish, and I have studied French for many years. My achievements in the French language are demonstrated by the first place award I received in the French language competition "le Concours de la Maison francophone de Cleveland", in 2013. I received a B.A. from Oberlin College in East Asian Studies, focusing on Chinese language. In the summer of 2014, I participated in the prestigious Chinese Language intensive, Princeton in Beijing, at Beijing Normal University through Princeton University. I also have received excellent grades in mathematics courses throughout my schooling.
I have had experience teaching and tutoring since high school. When I was in high school, I taught a weekly French language class to elementary school students. Throughout college, I tutored French one-on-one, and I worked as a teachers assistant for the French department, teaching in a group setting. As a summer job during college, I worked at a college tutoring center teaching Mathematics, primarily Algebra for students who were struggling. I have been tutoring Spanish privately, since graduating college. In January 2014 I took a colloquium and training course on teaching English as a second language, at Oberlin College. The course included theory on pedagogy that was applicable to teaching any subject, challenges specific to English language, and also provided opportunities to teach to a group of English language learners in a classroom setting. It was such a valuable experience, and I am returning to take the course in January 2015, in order to continue to enrich my teaching abilities.
I am a good listener and sensitive to any challenges students may be having in their studies. As a tutor it is important for me to be a comfortable and approachable resource to tutees, and I strongly believe that the nature of the relationship with tutees is as essential as my knowledge of the subject matter. Teaching is a passion of mine and I am constantly exploring and investigating pedagogy theories in order to improve the services I provide as a teacher. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I majored in East Asian Studies at Oberlin College, and I had a concentration in Chinese language. Chinese language is a huge part of my life; it's my passion, and I spend much of my free time continuing to explore and research this fascinating field of knowledge. The summer of 2013, I participated in the prestigious Chinese language intensive immersion program at Princeton in Beijing. I continued to deepen my knowledge of the complexities and structures of the language after graduating college by auditing a graduate course on Chinese linguistics. I have recently begun tutoring the language privately, and I find teaching it to be a blast.
