About Shawna

I have a degree in Creative Writing from SUNY/Empire State College. I currently teach an advanced writing course to non-native speakers at a learning center in Soho. I also teach an advanced beginner's class at the YMCA in Brooklyn and volunteer at the Brooklyn Public Library teaching English. I love teaching, and the students are fantastic.

An important aspect of learning is gaining confidence in yourself and being encouraged to take risks. I recently heard a talk about the fact that students are afraid to make mistakes and therefore become generally inhibited. How else can you learn? It's what tutoring is all about: trying, making some mistakes, finding out the best way to correct them. It's about practicing, having fun in the process, and expanding your skills and knowledge in as complete a way as possible.

I enjoy meeting students from the U.S. and all over the world. I look forward to meeting you! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how we can work together. We can discuss what you hope to accomplish. I'm happy to work with more than one person at a time, and can adjust fees accordingly. I'll meet you at a convenient library or cafe to study. My schedule is fairly flexible.

I have a 24-hour cancellation policy, but I will re-schedule for no extra fee.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I've always been an A student in English. I've been teaching English to non-native speakers, but the methods I use apply to native speakers as well. I bring samples of great writing--in every form--to encourage students to love to write and read. And I completed Grammar for ESL at The New School in Manhattan and have a BA in Creative Writing/Cultural Studies from SUNY.

English

I've always been an A student in English. I've taken writing courses from great journalists and fiction writers, and earned a BA in Creative Writing/Cultural Studies from SUNY/Empire State. Writing and literature are passions of mine, and I bring that passion to my students. I try to expose them to the worlds of experience that great writing brings to us, and encourage them to express themselves so that they can share their own experience--and learn to write and read in the process!

ESL/ESOL

I am currently teaching ESL at the Brooklyn Public Library, Kaplan International/Soho, and the Brooklyn YMCA. I also completed a course, Grammar for ESL, at The New School in Manhattan. It was a rigorous class that included the study of grammar as well as experience with teaching methods and materials.

TOEFL

I have been teaching English to mixed-level ESL students at the BPL, as well as advanced writing to ESL students at Kaplan International in Soho. I was recently hired by the YMCA in Brooklyn to teach ESL to advanced beginners, and sometimes intermediate students. I completed Grammar for ESL at The New School in Manhattan and have a BA in Creative Writing/Cultural Studies from SUNY. I have extensive experience as a writer, editor--and reader, as well as other teaching experience in various fields. I include reading, writing and speaking in all my classes and draw upon the amazing resources online: movies, music, etc. as well as great books of poetry, essays, fiction, fairy tales, etc etc.
