I teach fine art, guiding students toward mastery of skills in seeing, in technique, and in creative thinking. I work with college students, adults, and children 12 and older to improve abilities in drawing, painting, and sculpture, and to develop a vocabulary to express ideas.

These skills can be applied toward portfolio prep for AP Art, as well as for admissions to art high schools and colleges, or for job interviews. Through my experience on Portfolio Review panels at the School of Visual Arts and Pratt, I know how to help create and edit successful portfolios. My most recent portfolio prep student just got into her top choice art school.

I also help with researching, writing, and studying for exams in Art History, Art Appreciation, and Art Theory. In addition, I help artists and curators prepare for exhibitions by editing artist statements, curatorial statements, bios, resumes, application materials, and other critical documents.

I have 18 years of experience teaching and mentoring in public and private settings, and currently teach college level Art History. I am a patient and caring instructor, and I customize lessons as I get to know my students.

My own artwork has been shown internationally and across the United States at the South Dakota Art Museum, the Contemporary Museum of Baltimore, the Temple University Gallery in Philadelphia, and FLAG Foundation in New York. I was awarded a Chenven Foundation Grant, a Smack Mellon Studio Fellowship, and Artist Residency Grants with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Vermont Studio Center, the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and the La Napoule Art Foundation. My 2016 solo exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art was named one of the Top Ten Art Shows of the Year.

Please contact me if you would like to see a portfolio of my work or student work, or have any questions about working together.

Art

Art History,

Art History

I have developed and taught college courses in Western Art History, Art Appreciation, and Art Theory, specializing in Renaissance through the rise of Modernism as well as Contemporary Art. I offer guidance with analyzing and interpreting art from historic to contemporary examples, as well as assistance with editing papers. My methods focus on helping students to develop an understanding of the big picture of social and cultural movements, revealing the ways that thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs have shifted over time, and showing how art and artifacts contain these stories. By developing an understanding of the trajectory of art history, as well as a vocabulary to effectively express ideas, students are prepared to think through the essay questions on exams that go beyond memorization.
Art Theory,

Art Theory

Art Theory addresses the way that humans have made sense of the world throughout time. From expressions of beauty, celebration, and reverence, to tragedy and despair, there is nothing beyond the scope of artistic production. As an active studio artist with 5 years of experience as an Art History Professor, I help with researching, writing, and studying for exams in Art History, Art Appreciation, and Art Theory. I am excellent at helping to synthesize ideas, with a particular strength for improving syntax and clarity.
Drawing,

Drawing

I have my Masters of Fine Art including a background in traditional drawing, and my students learn drawing skills based on observation by drawing from still lifes, architecture, landscape, and the figure, using charcoal, ink, graphite, and collage, as well as possible experiments in nontraditional materials. Drawing is a critical skill for artists, but also recommended for writers and anyone interested in deepening their engagement with the world around them. As your observational drawing skills increase, you will learn to interpret the dimensional world and accurately render from life. Students from all skill levels, including no experience, are welcome.
Painting

Painting

I received my MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, am an active studio artist, and I have numerous years of experience teaching. The foundational art skills that I teach can be applied toward portfolio preparation for admissions to art high schools and colleges, or for job interviews. I have taught oil, acrylic, and watercolor painting in a variety of settings, focusing on fundamentals as well as exploring through experimental projects.

So awesome!

Slye is wonderful! She's so patient and kind and easy to talk to..... she seems to have a lot of knowledge. She taught me some things about sketching that hard not learned before. I can't wait to see what else I learn from her!

Clear, concise and attentive!

Skye booked a time with me. We went over my paper and took the time to understand what I was trying to say so that we could edit it and it corresponded to my thesis. What I was trying to express was particularly hard for me to put into words. Thanks to Skye, I achieved my goal :)

Skye is the real deal. She is everything she says on her description and more!

Lessons were very well tailored to your goals - she is wonderful to work with, and incredibly knowledgable. I’m currently finishing my Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field, but wanted to apply at the Master’s level for Visual Art. However, I had no training; and was very overwhelmed by applications until I started working with Skye. She was able to break the goal down into a well organized and manageable process. Our lessons helped me create my portfolio from the beginning to the end, allowing me to form my ideas, and then develop them into a cohesive body of work. We began working in the summer for January applications, and had around 11 sessions in total over 6 months. I was able to apply to 8 masters programs. Skye also helped a great deal with the artist’s statement, which was really crucial. My portfolio definitely would not have looked the way it does now had it not been for Skye’s mentorship. She is very good at guiding her students while allowing them to expand on their own creative ideas. I am still awaiting responses, but so far I have been accepted to my top choice New York Academy of Art, and recently I received notification that I've been shortlisted for an interview at Ruskin School of Art at Oxford! Thank you Skye!!

Very sweet and informative

Skye was very sweet and very helpful in making a portfolio for my daughter. She helped my daughter in milestones in the short amount of time that they were given to make the portfolio. The portfolio looks great and were very glad to have found Skye to help my daughter in such short notice.
