About Skye

I teach fine art, guiding students toward mastery of skills in seeing, in technique, and in creative thinking. I work with college students, adults, and children 12 and older to improve abilities in drawing, watercolor, collage, and sculpture, and to develop a vocabulary to express ideas.

These skills can be applied toward portfolio prep for admissions to art high schools and colleges, or for job interviews. Through my experience on Portfolio Review panels at the School of Visual Arts and Pratt, I know how to help create and edit successful portfolios. My most recent portfolio prep student just got into her top choice art school.

I also help with researching, writing, and studying for exams in Art History, Art Appreciation, and Art Theory. In addition, I help artists and curators prepare for exhibitions by editing artist statements, curatorial statements, bios, resumes, application materials, and other critical documents.

I have 18 years of experience teaching and mentoring in public and private settings, and currently teach college level Art History. I am a patient and caring instructor, and I customize lessons as I get to know my students.

My own artwork has been shown internationally and across the United States at the South Dakota Art Museum, the Contemporary Museum of Baltimore, the Temple University Gallery in Philadelphia, and FLAG Foundation in New York. I was awarded a Chenven Foundation Grant, a Smack Mellon Studio Fellowship, and Artist Residency Grants with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Vermont Studio Center, the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and the La Napoule Art Foundation. My 2016 solo exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art was named one of the Top Ten Art Shows of the Year. My work is featured in Learning to Love You More by Harrell Fletcher and Miranda July, and is in the Robert L. Pfannebecker Collection, the Vanderbilt University Collection, and many personal collections in the US and Germany.

Please contact me if you would like to see a portfolio of my work or student work, or have any questions about working together.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

I received my Master of Fine Art from Cranbrook Academy of Art, and have developed and taught courses in college level Western Art History and Art Appreciation. Specialization includes Renaissance through the rise of Modernism as well as Contemporary Art.

Art Theory

I am an active studio artist engaged in the contemporary art world. I have my MFA, and 5 years of experience teaching college level Art Survey.

Drawing

I have training in classical life drawing, and my own studio practice includes elements of experimental drawing and collage. I developed and taught a portfolio-building course called Fundamentals of Drawing at Cranbrook Academy of Art Summer Studio, emphasizing drawing from observation through still life, landscape, and the figure. I combine traditional skills with experimental techniques, customizing lessons as I get to know your needs.

Painting

I have taught oil, acrylic, and watercolor painting in a variety of settings, focusing on fundamentals as well as exploring through experimental projects.

Writing

I received a 4.0 in my undergraduate writing minor, and continue to write successful grants, proposals and essays. I have had several pieces of writing published. I am excellent at helping to synthesize ideas, with a particular strength for improving syntax and clarity.

Amazing!

Skye is super friendly, helpful and patient. She is great at explaining things I don't understand, and never makes me feel like I am asking a stupid question. Could not have asked for a better tutor!
