About Josh

I am a professional tutor specializing in essay writing on all subjects, creative writing, grammar and reading comprehension. I am also a professional editor and dramaturg, working with professional authors to help them refine and deepen their manuscripts. I am currently on the faculty of Fordham University's graduate program in writing, and have previously been on the faculty of Purchase College, SUNY in the BFA writing program and at the New School in their MFA writing program.

I have a wide-ranging and very active curiosity! I'm an information sponge. One of my favorite parts of being a writing tutor is learning about my clients' subjects. I have had clients hire me to help them write essays on everything from midwifery to international conflict zones and world orders and have loved the knowledge I have gained along the way. In this way, I learn as much from my clients as they do from me.

In addition to going over the basics of good essay writing like organization, development of ideas, sentence and paragraph structure, use of vocabulary, etc., I also employ a system of "neutral questions" to help you go deeper into your own ideas, synthesize your thoughts, and locate your own areas of deepest engagement. I find that this technique almost always leads to bigger, more complex ideas, more passionate rhetorical argument and more thorough work -- in short, better writing. I then work with you to structure your writing most effectively. Because my focus is on helping you go deeper into your own ideas and helping you develop and organize your thoughts and writing, there is no subject on which we can't create great writing together.

I'm also very qualified in SAT and ACT English and Writing test preparation, helping you sharpen your writing, understand quotes and long passages, and increase your vocabulary and grammar knowledge. I can also help you with test taking strategies to help you approach the SATs more calmly and effectively.

I am a graduate of The Dalton School and Wesleyan University, and have tutored and worked in the Writing Workshop of both institutions. My academic writing has won the GLAAD Prize, a nationally recognized award for scholarship. I'm also a theater artist and have won the Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience. I enjoy culture of all kinds -- music, movies, books, magazines, online content, etc.

I look forward to helping you with all of your verbal, reading and writing needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

As a teacher of acting in MFA programs (New School for Drama), colleges (as a Guest Artist at Juilliard, NYU, University of Minnesota and others), high school (though the MCC Youth Theater Company) and grade school (Guest Artist with the sixth grade at The Dalton School), teaching public speaking and presentation is something I have well over a decade's experience in. As an award-winning director, I work with professional actors regularly throughout the year and as such voice and speech is a part of my skill set.

Reading

I have been a lover of great literature all my life. I have taught in the creative writing departments of Fordham University's MFA program, Purchase College, SUNY's BFA Program and the New School for Drama's MFA Program. My own writing has been commissioned by the Kennedy Center and Published by TCG, among others, and my academic writing has received national recognition. Most of all, I am passionate about teaching the craft of writing and instilling in my students a love of language. I have worked with all ages, from 10 to 50 and am able to help my students read more deeply and more passionately, think more clearly and complexly, and understand and internalize the tools needed for compelling writing, whether critical or creative.

Theater

I am a Drama Desk Award-winnning theater director with extensive knowledge about contemporary plays and the classical canon. I have taught in the MFA program at the New School for Drama, teaching in the Acting, Directing and Playwriting departments. I have also taught script analysis and contemporary plays at the Stella Adler Conservatory of NYU and at the National Theater Institute and have extensive experience teaching acting, directing, playwriting and theater history at schools and theaters throughout the country. Represented at Abrams Artists Agency.

Writing

As a professional editor and dramaturg, I have helped hundreds of writers improve the manuscripts. I have been hired by individual artists, nationally recognized development organizations, colleges and universities, writing centers and theaters across the country. I pride myself on helping writers identify their own goals and working rigorously and specifically to help them meet these goals most successfully without ever diluting what is unique about their voice. Manuscripts developed with me have gone on to win awards and be published in various periodicals, collections and imprints. Scripts developed with me have been published and produced in theaters all over the world. Students of mine have seen significant improvement in their writing leading to higher grades, college admissions and deeper, more enjoyable engagement with their subjects.
