About Abby

Hi!

I am a certified ESL teacher and academic tutor. I have experience teaching all levels of English, including English for the workplace. I have taught ESL speaking and writing classes at St. John's University; Teachers College, Columbia University; the New Americans Welcome Center; as well as through numerous private organizations. I also tutor students who need help with English/Social Studies/Literature classes, AP English classes, the REGENTS and the SAT.

I hold a BA in Media Studies and an MA in Middle-Eastern Studies. Therefore, if you need any help writing papers in the arts/humanities/history, I would be happy to help out. Prior to working as an ESL teacher, I worked in publishing as a literary assistant/ online editor and had great success editing manuscripts, papers, and even blogs.

As far as teaching is concerned, I genuinely enjoy helping others and try to make my classes/ sessions as communicative and engaging as possible. Tutoring is a refreshing experience for me since I learn something new from my students each and every day.

Learning is just a matter of perspective; finding new ways to look at and explore the world around you. I look forward to meeting you and exploring together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Having previously worked in publishing, I have a unique eye when it comes to English. I am experienced in helping students achieve their best in a variety of English fields. For example, I am just as comfortable tutoring college-level English as I am high-school literature/English. I currently teach ESL and English classes to graduate and undergraduate students at St. John's University. I really have a passion for all aspects of English, and try to instill that passion in my students!

ESL/ESOL

I have been successfully teaching ESL for many years now. I received my TESOL certification from Teachers College, Columbia University and I also have my BEST Plus Certification. I love teaching ESL because it allows me to hone my English and teaching skills, while also giving me the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. I am constantly working to discover the most unique and effective teaching methods possible.

Literature

I have had a passion for literature for as long as I can remember. Although I no longer work in publishing, I have kept my love for literature alive in the classroom. I currently teach a variety of literature-related classes to both graduate and undergraduate students at St. John's University. I believe that anyone can become a "good" literature reader/ writer with the right support and guidance. My literature lessons are personalized to each individual student so that weaknesses can be spotted and improved upon. Working together, at the student's pace, weaknesses are eventually overcome, and ultimately, student confidence is enhanced!

Proofreading

Having previously worked in publishing, I have a unique eye when it comes to proofreading.

SAT Reading

I have been helping students ace the verbal portion of the SAT for many years. When it comes to preparing for the SAT's, I know that method, as well as practice, are paramount. Therefore, I like to scaffold my lessons methodically; each lesson is created specifically for the student in mind. Meaning, I assess each student independently so that I can create lessons that specifically target his/her weak areas. After giving suggestions/ test taking tips, I like to go through a variety of reading passages at the student's pace. Finally, it's practice, practice, practice!

SAT Writing

I've spent many years successfully helping students achieve high scores on the reading and writing portion of the SAT. My methods are effective, yet always tailored to the individual student.

TOEFL

I have been tutoring in TOEFL for many years now. I have taught TOEFL classes at St. John's University, as well as privately. My method for teaching the TOEFL combines standard test prep. methods, as well as TOEFL "tricks" that I've picked up along the way. I try to make my TOEFL lessons as engaging and fun as possible, while keeping them structured enough to ensure that my students' scores improve.

Excellent tutor

Abby tutors my 7th grade daughter in ELA and she has shown a marked improvement in her writing and reading comprehension Abby is very patient and calm and at the same time keeps her interested and engaged. She always leaves her with exercises to continue with until the next session. We (including my daughter) are very happy with Abby as a tutor and would recommend her to others in a heartbeat.
