Arizona State University (Jazz Studies)
The New England Conservatory of Music (Master's)
I recently moved to Brooklyn after finishing my master's degree in Boston. I have always felt a strong gravitation towards teaching and interacting with others. I teach in all aspects of music--theory, composition, ear training, and improvisation. I specialize on the bass (upright and electric) and I teach beginning guitar and piano. I also frequently tutor students in math, science, and writing.
I have a wide variety of teaching experience, running music clinics at festivals abroad, leading classes and ensembles, TA experience at two universities, and private one-on-one music instruction in my own studio. I was a fellow for a community music and education program that brought performances and presentations to underprivileged schools, homeless shelters, and nursing homes. I was the interim jazz bass teacher at Arizona State University for a year teaching students at an advanced level while maintaining my private studio of younger students, ages 3-17.
As an active performer, I have played regularly throughout the Phoenix, Boston, and New York City areas with a multitude of groups. My formal training has been in jazz but I frequently perform folk, rock, world music, avant garde, and classical music primarily on bass but also piano, saxophone, guitar. I enjoy exploring these various musical mediums as a way to learn more about human emotions, cultures, and history. I am most passionate about creating and performing my own compositions and I strive to inspire the same creative mindset in my students. This year, I was a recipient of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award/Grant.
My policy is that I offer my first lesson for free if you do not feel completely satisfied with it. I can travel to you but I also work out of my place in Brooklyn for a slightly discounted fee. I am also available for group lessons.
I look forward to meeting you and getting the chance to work with you! I recently moved to Brooklyn after finishing my master's degree in Boston. I have always felt a strong gravitation towards teaching and interacting with others. I teach in all aspects of music--theory, composition, ear
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have studied composition in class settings and private lessons for the last six years at Arizona State University and the New England Conservatory. I have traveled around the United States and abroad performing my own compositions with various ensembles. In February 2014 I won the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award/Grant. In 2011 I won the Faculty Choice category of the ASU Jazz Composition Competition.
Ear training has been a big part of my musical training that I've been receiving for the last 11 years. Throughout my undergraduate and graduate career I was required to take ear training classes. I managed to get straight A's in those classes too! I was a TA for and undergraduate course in harmony and ear training at the New England Conservatory.
I have been performing and teaching music for the last 10 years. I play jazz, classical, rock, folk, and more. I recently finished my masters at the New England Conservatory of Music in Music Performance. I play bass, guitar, piano, and saxophone.
My first instrument was the bass guitar which I picked up 12 years ago. I have played in many different ensembles and in countless genres. I studied music performance at ASU and the New England Conservatory of music. Though my main instrument is bass (electric and upright) I am very comfortable on guitar and piano.
I have taken classical, rock, and jazz history courses at an undergraduate and graduate level. I typically teach classical history from the Norton History of Western Music and rock and jazz from various other sources. I like to teach history with a blend of listening and music theory in order to better understand the historical context.
