My passion for teaching foreign languages comes from an equally strong love of learning them. With my experience starting in high school, I have worked on ways to teach for several years and worked with a wide variety of students. The most important thing when teaching is conveying the material in an accessible and understandable way and providing practice in order to allow familiarization.
In college I had great deal of experience with teaching foreign languages to a variety of students. I initially taught Spanish to elementary school classes at a local public school while at the same time taking classes on language pedagogy and attending workshops. Additionally working as a Spanish and Russian tutor with high school and college students and teaching the equivalent of first semester Russian, I gained experience in how to teach two different languages to a variety of students. Continuing by getting a CELTA, the commonality I've kept has been keeping the material accessible and interesting and providing practice experience to gauge comprehension, tailoring it if necessary to the student's needs.
Equally important for me is getting to know the student and making learning the language enjoyable.
Logistically, I offer flexible timing and am willing to travel around New York to meet the student at a convenient location. I have had multiple meetings with Ben, to improve my Russian speaking skills in preparation for a trip to the Ukraine. Ben is always very punctual, and on time. Whenever we go over course work, he makes sure that you fully understand the concept of his lesson plan by throwing in subtle questions.
Ben then uses various real life examples to help fortify your understanding of the subject material, which helps drastically with long term retention. Ben's down to earth and laid back - yet professional personality makes him easy to be around and get along with as well. Great tutor, I plan to have more sessions with him in the future.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a CELTA certificate and have taught English to a variety of learners in many different settings.
I have been studying Russian for several years and am fluent in the language. My previous experience has included teaching the equivalent of the first semester of Russian and tutoring students in it. I have lived in Russia and am familiar with the culture. Tutoring methods depend on the level of the learner, although I have worked mainly with beginners.
Minor in Hispanic Studies from Oberlin College, worked in the SITES program teaching at a nearby public school, and tutoring at Oberlin High School. I have also spent a month in Spain taking an intensive language course.
