About Peter

I recently graduated from Stony Brook University with a M.A. in mathematics. My educational background also includes a M.S. in applied mathematics from Stony Brook University as well as a B.S. in mathematics and physics from the University of Scranton. As an undergraduate I had the opportunity to work as a physics tutor for three semesters. During my time as a physics tutor I worked with individuals and large groups of students needing help with introductory physics courses. As many of the students required to take these courses did not have a strong mathematical background, I quickly learned the importance of not only having an in depth understanding of the subject but of also being able to convey the material in meaningful and interesting ways.

From my personal experience as a student and a tutor I have found that there are two rather important aspects of learning: concepts and applications. Sometimes a student can be too focused on learning how to solve a specific problem through rote memorization with only a superficial understanding of how what they are doing fits into a larger context. On the other hand seeing applications and working through problems really helps to solidify the concepts. I feel that in order to be an effective tutor one must address both of these aspects and that my background in both pure mathematics as well as physics and applied mathematics enables me to do just that.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Actuarial Science

I have taken graduate level courses in and have tutored students in Probability and Financial Mathematics - topics which make up the material on the first two actuarial exams. I have passed the first two actuarial exams - P and FM with scores of 10/10 and 8/10 respectively. The key to passing these exams is a combination of understanding the material and doing a ton of practice problems. In addition to helping a student understand the material covered in the exams I will be able help the student work through difficult practice problems and give insight into the sort of study regimen necessary to succeed on the actuarial exams.

Differential Equations

I completed an M.S. in Applied Mathematics as well as a B.S. in Mathematics. I have taken several courses on Differential Equations as well as Partial Differential Equations and have had the opportunity to tutor a few students doing coursework either directly about or involving Differential Equations.

Discrete Math

Discrete Mathematics is rather broad subject encompassing areas of combinatorics, graph theory, and combinatorial geometry, number theory, etc. I have had many undergraduate and graduate classes covering these topics.

Linear Algebra

As a math major I have taken several courses in both Abstract and Linear Algebra. I am currently tutoring a graduate student who is taking a course in Linear Algebra. I have also taken courses in Numerical Linear Algebra, which involves writing algorithms (in C or C++) to solve problems from Linear Algebra.

Probability

I have taken graduate level courses in probability/statistics. Additionally I have passed actuarial exam P with a score of 10/10.
