I have a Master of Fine Art in Painting and Drawing. My background includes teaching young people who are gifted and talented in the arts as well as people who simply want to try it out. As one of my art instructors once told me, "It is easier to learn drawing and painting than it is to play golf". I firmly believe that we can all draw and paint.
By way of a brief bio, after 30 years as a practicing Clinical Psychologist and academician (doctoral student in Psychology) I recently completed a 14 year metamorphosis into a fine artist. I earned my MFA from Brooklyn College (CUNY) in 2012. My educational background also includes a BA from Williams College and a Ph.D. from the George Washington University, both in Psychology.
I approach art tutoring by assessing student goals and learning needs. Honest feedback is important to growth. My strengths in academic art (traditional drawing and painting) include the figure, landscape and still life genres. Contemporary art skills include process/conceptual art.
I believe that art students should be mentored regarding how to make a living in art and that this begins with learning as much as possible about a variety of approaches to art. Breadth of knowledge in the field of art is just as important as it is in any other field.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
