About Jessica

I'm here to help if you are interested in:
*boosting your SAT writing or reading scores
*perfecting your Common App essays (Everything from brainstorming to keeping responses under those pesky word count limits)
*writing thoughtful, well-organized essays for English classes

I have four years teaching in both NYC public and private schools, I have a degree in English and American Literature and Language from Harvard and my Master's in Teaching from Columbia Teachers College (and, for what it's worth, I got a perfect score on my Verbal SAT). I love teaching, and I love helping students hash out, articulate, and master their arguments and ideas. If that's something that appeals to you, then let's talk!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I was an English teacher for four years, and majored in English at Harvard.

Grammar

I was an English teacher for four years and an SAT tutor for 1.5 years before that. I helped students master grammar rules both in context (revising papers, etc.) and through more traditional practice (diagramming, finding grammatical errors in sentences, doing practice SAT Writing questions, etc.)

Literature

I was an English teacher for four years, and majored in English and American Literature and Language at Harvard. I have always been an avid reader, and make a point of sharing that love of literature with all my students.

Proofreading

I also worked in the editorial department of a major publishing house for two years after graduating from college.

PSAT

I was an English teacher for four years and a tutor--focusing on SAT and PSAT prep--for a year and a half before that. And, for what it's worth, I got a perfect score on the Verbal section of my PSATs when I took them and won a Merit Scholarship as a result of my PSAT scores.

Reading

While I was getting my master's in teaching at Columbia, I worked one-on-one with students who struggled with reading as part of my student teaching experience. I was an English teacher for four years, and majored in English at Harvard.

SAT Reading

I was an SAT tutor for 1.5 years and conducted voluntary SAT sessions with my students after school when I was a teacher.

SAT Writing

I also got a perfect score on my Verbal SATs.

Vocabulary

I teach vocabulary in a variety of ways--through context, through memorization, and through roots, suffixes and prefixes. Eventually, my students build a strong enough base to make educated guesses when faced with unfamiliar words. I was an English teacher for four years, majored in English at Harvard, and got a perfect score on my Verbal SATs.

Writing

While at Harvard I had a regular column in an on-campus newspaper and won an award for my senior thesis.
