About Hannah

I am a private tutor and academic consultant with 10+ years of experience in the cutthroat academic climate of New York City’s elite public and private schools. I provide general scholastic tutoring, homework help, enrichment in individual subjects, standardized test prep, and core academic aptitudes: study skills, research methods, organization, time management, vocabulary, retention, composition, work ethic.

While I am based in NYC and conduct my sessions in my clients’ homes, I regularly work remotely with boarding school, undergraduate and graduate school students utilizing Skype, FaceTime, and Google Drive.

I have a 98% client satisfaction rate and 96% of my students have gained admission to their top choice schools. Most importantly, every student has succeeded qualitatively rather than just quantitatively, gaining confidence, resourcefulness, and strength of character. My tutoring philosophy begins and ends with the student's sense of self, which I endeavor to illuminate and enrich.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

The challenge with the ACT math is not the content as much as the timing: 60 questions in 60 minutes is tough on even the brightest math whizzes. I'm highly skilled at drilling my Students to establish pacing, reviewing the topics that appear the most throughout the section (factoring, ratios, proportions, polynomials, plug-in problems), and teaching the pre calculus topics that some students have yet to cover in school. One of my students improved his composite score from a 23 to a 31 in less than 6 months and 2 sittings. He got a 34 on the math, after starting with a 26.

College Counseling

I am a private tutor and academic consultant with 10+ years of experience in the cutthroat academic climate of New York City’s elite public and private schools. I provide general scholastic tutoring, homework help, enrichment in individual subjects, standardized test prep, and core academic training in: study skills, research methods, composition, public speaking, presentation, debate, organization, time management, vocabulary, retention, composition, work ethic.

While I am based in NYC and conduct my sessions in my clients’ homes, I regularly work remotely with boarding school, international, undergraduate and graduate students over Skype, Google Drive, and Whiteboard.

This year alone, I helped high school seniors craft their applications, personal and supplemental essays, helping them gain admission to: Brown's PLME (Undergrad + Med School Combined Program), Yale, Emory, Tufts, Skidmore, and others. I've been college counseling since I began tutoring in 2005. It's the most enjoyable phase of my profession as the students get to know themselves better and gain a voice in representing themselves to the outside world. This past month, I was invited to give a College Counseling talk at Johns Hopkins University for high school female athletes. I received hugs, thank you's, and even a new client. More rewarding was seeing how they understood what I meant when I described the personal statement as "the perfect instagram pic" and explained how they chose the specific "filter" and analogous "photo edits" to put the optimal portrait of themselves before college admissions reps.

ESL/ESOL

Have worked with native Japanese, Russian, Korean, Colombian, and Italian speakers on ESL/ESOL and preparation for TOEFL exam. As I'm multilingual (advanced fluency in Spanish, Latin, basic French, conversational Japanese, beginner's Russian), I'm able to communicate in both languages enough to help explain grammar, pronunciation, syntax, parts of speech, etc. I recognize the most problematic components of the English language to foreigners and can easily pinpoint the areas of greatest concern or difficulty for the individual learner. Whether for business purposes, examinations, extended stay or exchange programs, or general improvements in colloquial English, my students always excel and acquire a host of other skills to enhance their speech, vocabulary, written expression, and understanding of the value of comprehensive language instruction.

ISEE

I've been teaching the ISEE specifically since 2011, and have worked with over 20 students for the lower, middle and upper levels of the test. I've had a 100% success rate with the middle and upper level test-takers, each meeting or exceeding their goal. As for my 3 lower level students: one earned 9's, one earned 6's and 7's, and the other, a second grader who had skipped a grade, earned 4-5's. The middle level is by far the easiest to teach because the content is somewhat commensurate with the student's school-based learning in reading comprehension and mathematics achievement. The verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning sections across all ISEE levels are challenging, but I help give the students an edge with vocabulary - determining definition from context - and get them ahead in math by at least one grade level.

Regents

I've tutored students from Lehman HSAS and Brooklyn Tech in practically all Regents exams for the past few years. I'm especially strong with Algebra, Geometry, integrated Geometry, US and Global History, English, Spanish, and Biology as I also prep my kids for the SAT II subject tests and AP exams in those subjects in which they are offered. I'm currently tutoring 5 sophomores at HSAS at Lehman College in all academic subjects and hosted an AP world history Jeopardy group review session which went over resoundingly well. My students, their classmates who joined (some of whom are now new clients), their parents, and their scores likely will reflect how thoroughly well prepared, knowledgeable, and confident they feel with their world history wherewithal.
