About Kenny

By applying the latest research in educational psychology, I teach my students the study habits they need to excel in any subject. I am always trying to improve my teaching methods and empower my students with the resilience, grit, and motivation necessary for a successful career.

I scored in the 99th percentile on the SAT. A graduate of Stuyvesant High School and Vanderbilt University, I have over 10,000 hours of test prep experience (at age 10, I began preparing for the SHSAT and SAT exams).

Having received almost seven years of continuous of tutoring for these exams, I have significant experience on both sides of the table. I knows which tutoring strategies work and which just create busywork.

Since I began tutoring four years ago, I've worked with students ranging from the elementary through high school level.

To maximize the effectiveness of my instruction and the individual attention I can provide, I limit myself to 7 students a week. (As of June 9, I am meeting regularly with 6 students.)

I have a patient and creative approach to tutoring. I help students identify their weaknesses and work to help them improve their knowledge and skills. I try to make each lesson dynamic, engaging, and enjoyable. I am committed to helping my students improve, and am always easy to reach by phone or by email with any questions that pop up in between lessons.

Frequently asked questions:

Q: Why should I get test prep tutoring?
A: Effective test preparation can result in a huge payoff: the most selective universities also award the largest financial aid packages (with need-based scholarships totaling over $220,000 over a period of 4 years!). However, admittance requires near perfect scores on standardized tests along with a high GPA, a record of leadership/extracurricular activities, positive teacher recommendations, and an excellent college application essay.

Q: Where do meet with your students?
A: Usually, in-home or in a public location (e.g. public library, cafes). I'm also certified by WyzAnt for online tutoring.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Economics

I majored in Economics and have experience in the following courses: AP Macro & Microeconomics, Intermediate Macro & Microeconomic Theory, Economic Statistics, Money and Banking, Latin American Economic Development, Development Economics, Law and Economics, Industrial Organization, and Public Finance.

When I tutor any of these subjects, my main goal is to help my students develop the best study habits - based on research by educational psychologists.

ISEE

I have extensive tutoring experience with the types of questions on the ISEE: synonyms and sentence completions (Verbal Reasoning), main idea, supporting ideas, inference, vocabulary, organization/logic, and tone/style/figurative language in a reading passage (Reading Comprehension), word problems and quantitative comparisons (Quantitative Reasoning), and math ranging from simple addition and subtraction (Lower Level) to second-year algebra (Upper Level).

The Writing section is usually an essay prompt which asks students to describe a/an: person / animal, place, object, experience / event, idea, or ambition. To practice for this section, I engage students in an "essay writing bootcamp."

Furthermore, all of these question types are similar to the ones that I studied in preparation for the SHSAT, old SAT, and new SAT.

SAT Math

I scored perfect 800s on both the Math section of the SAT and the SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test. I tutor students in SAT Math and the Level 1 & 2 Subject Tests using personalized homework assignments to target individual weaknesses, a comprehensive list of tips and strategies, the most recent official study guides, real past exams, and free online resources.

SAT Reading

I scored in the 98th percentile on the Critical Reading section of the SAT. I tutor students in SAT Reading using the most recent official study guides, real past exams, word lists/flashcards, and the best rated prep book for SAT Reading.

SAT Writing

I scored in the 96th percentile on the Writing section of the SAT. I tutor students in SAT Writing starting with a review of all the grammar rules tested in the multiple choice section and finishing with an "essay writing boot camp." We practice using real past exams to achieve maximum proficiency.

SSAT

I have extensive tutoring experience with the types of questions on the SSAT.

The Verbal section of the SSAT is composed of two kinds of questions: synonyms and analogies.

The Quantitative (math) section on the Upper Level SSAT includes problems involving arithmetic, elementary algebra, geometry, and other concepts.

The Reading Comprehension section on the Upper Level SSAT tests a student's understanding of the Main Idea, Supporting Ideas, Inference, Vocabulary, Organization/Logic, and Tone/Style/Figurative Language in a reading passage.

The Writing section gives an aphorism, asking students if they agree or disagree and to support their opinion with examples.

I've tutored and have received tutoring for each of these questions during my preparation for the SHSAT, old SAT, and new SAT.

SAT: 200 point increase in 5 sessions! — My sister worked with Kenny to study for the SAT exam. This was a second attempt at the test. After 5 weekly 2-hour sessions, the math score improved by a full 100 points, with an overall 200 point improvement. After each session, I received a summary of the skills covered, and HW recommendations. She reports that he was clear and patient. Highly recommended! ...
