About Grace

As a literacy tutor, my goal is to make my dyslexic student curious about words. My first student was my severely dyslexic sister who at age 14 couldn't read, much less spell simple words like -crab-, -shot-, and -plump-. She hated anything to do with reading and spelling. A year later she was able to read and spell words like -incomprehensible-, -submicroscopic-, and -disillusionment- all thanks to the Barton System. Not only is she able to read now but she is addicted to a series of novels!

I have been trained and certified in the Barton System which one of the most comprehensive Orton-Gillingham based programs. The Orton-Gillingham method is the golden standard in teaching reading to children and adults with dyslexia. O.G. instruction is effective because it is multi-sensory, sequential, and explicit. I have taken Lindamood-Bell's Lips training workshop on phonemic awareness for my most severely dyslexic students. I have also taken Susan Barton's 6-day graduate level Screening for Dyslexia seminar.

In addition to my O.G.-based training, I have taken countless Linguistics and Structured Word Inquiry courses to expose my students to a scientific approach to orthography. Spelling in English involves phonology, morphology, and etymology. Every word has a story and meaningful reasons for the way it is spelled, even "sight words!" Using SWI students use critical thinking and increase their vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Signs of Dyslexia:
- Terrible spelling
- Unable to sound out unknown words or nonsense words
- Unable to retain spelling words from spelling tests
- Slow choppy reading
- Relies on context clues when reading
- Makes guesses when reading

I tutor all students (ages 6 to adult) online using a screen sharing software. My hourly rate applies to 55-minute sessions.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

Students with dyslexia are my specialty! I have been trained in the Barton System (an Orton-Gillingham based program), Structured Word Inquiry, and Lindamood Bell's LIPS program. I have also attended Susan Barton's "Screening for Dyslexia" 6-day graduate level seminar. I am currently continuing my education with RealSpelling and Linguist-Educator Exchange.

Phonics

I use the Barton System for Reading and Spelling which is a comprehensive phonics program based on the Orton-Gillingham method. In addition to OG based training, I am continuously studying linguistics with RealSpelling and Linguist-Educator Exchange.
