About Isaac

My name is Isaac, and I have taught students of all ages and levels (elementary school through adult). While my main focus is tutoring chess, I also specialize in and have experience tutoring Math, English and Spanish (see more in the "Tutoring Subjects" section). Most of all, I enjoy seeing my students succeed and aim to create a positive learning experience.

I have a large breadth of teaching experience, which I believe distinguishes me from other chess instructors. As a debate coach for the Berkeley Carroll School for five years, I worked with high school students one-on-one during national-level tournaments, as well as in the classroom. I have taught at educational summer camps in Texas and California. I also have experience tutoring elementary school students on their reading and writing, and teaching English to Spanish-speaking adults in Manizales, Colombia. I base my teaching style on making our sessions relaxed and fun. At the same time, I design each of my lessons with the goal of imparting concrete, measurable skills.

I am a United States Chess Federation certified tournament player, with a rating of 1400. I have competed at the Marshall Chess Club in Manhattan, and was the captain of my high school's chess team. I currently volunteer as a chess instructor at PS 39 in Brooklyn. I excel at opening, middle, and end-game study, and during my lessons I use a mix of students' games, chess puzzles, online videos and computer analysis to keep students engaged.

Some quick facts about me:
-Graduated Yale College, class of 2012
-Double major in Latin American Studies and Literature (cumulative GPA of 3.71)
-I have coached Speech and Debate at the Berkeley Carroll School for five years, with one year of classroom teaching.
-I have tournament chess experience, and have been playing for over 15 years.
-I love to teach!

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions. I am happy to provide my complete resume and additional recommendations.

I look forward to hearing from you, and to helping you or your child succeed in their studies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Spanish

I am fluent in oral and written Spanish. I graduated from Yale College with a degree in Latin American Studies (double major with Literature), and excelled in all five of the language proficiency levels offered by Yale.

I have lived, worked and studied in South America. During my junior spring semester, I directly enrolled in a Bolivian University in La Paz (la Universidad Mayor de San Andres). My coursework, which included history and anthropology, took place entirely in Spanish with other Bolivian students. I have also taken summer courses in Buenos Aires, Argentina. My work experience includes internships at a mental health institute in Manizales, Colombia, and at a European-Union financed organization in El Alto, Bolivia.

I know how frustrating foreign language learning can be, and with my students I feel that mutual goal setting and patience are of paramount importance. I specialize in preparing for the Spanish SAT subject test. I utilize a variety of techniques when helping students memorize vocabulary and grammatical concepts, and I try to focus on the approach that works best for them. Whenever possible, I try to incorporate Spanish-language culture in order to make our lessons more engaging.

Language learning can open up a variety of career and educational opportunities, and as a former Spanish-language learner myself, I believe I am particularly well equipped to help my students succeed in their studies.

Great tutor, conscientious, fun, and easy to work with — Isaac is conscientious, creative, and diligent in designing each session to make it valuable and fun. He met with our teenage son a half dozen times to prepare for a trip to a Spanish-speaking country. Isaac planned thoughtful, enjoyable lessons that addressed specific grammatical areas while keeping the conversation lively and engaging - and almost 100% in Spanish. He was a pleasure to work with. ...
