About Benjamin

Hello!

My name is Ben and I have taught multiple subjects in multiple settings. I was a member of Teach for America where I taught in a KIPP middle school to general and special education students. I have taught Art in after school programs (one of which I was the Director of), summer camps and a special needs school. I have experience in common core standards and in test preparation.

I believe in using multiple learning modalities to build reading skills and have had success tapping into the unique learning needs of a wide range of students-- be they auditory, visual, kinesthetic or other learners. I am excellent at hooking students, modelling skills, checking for understanding and finding different ways to give students multiple 'at bats' with given skills.

I'm a creative problem solver who believes in the creative habit: I love to make art and am proud to have work in the permanent collection of the Rubin Museum of Art (New York, NY) and in the curriculum at Northeastern State University (Talequah, OK).

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

An a professional artist I Have worn many hats in many different industries including advertising, film and publishing. I have artwork in the permanent collection of the Rubin Museum of Art and one of my comics is taught in the curriculum at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. I have taught art in public and charter schools, after school programs and summer camps.

Phonics

Having worked as a reading teacher with special education and special needs students I have worked with students to improve their phonics skills. Part of my work in this field has been informed by speech and language therapy exercise drills where students practice controlling parts of the mouth while pronouncing various sounds.

Writing

I have taught English in a Brooklyn charter school and have had articles, comics, and illustrations published in magazines for print and digital publications.
