About Alexandra

In order to truly excel, you need a teacher who sees you as an individual and customizes your education to meet your specific needs. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of private teachers or tutors with the skill, patience, and creativity to work with you at that level of specificity.

That's where I come in. I am a National Merit Scholar and former UNLV professor with 25 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I have an MA in Theatre Arts from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, a BFA in Illustration from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and I graduated from one of the top elite private high schools in the country, Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii. I work closely with my students to understand their interests, their personalities, and their learning styles, and then create a specific curriculum customized to each student's needs and goals.

Whether you are looking for a tutor to help you prepare for finals or a teacher to build a course for you from the ground up, I will show you what it's like to have a teacher who really cares about how YOU learn.

I offer tutoring for elementary to undergraduate students, and private instruction to homeschoolers and professional children. I instruct across most disciplines in the Humanities, and I specialize in theatre, writing, history and culture. I can create a custom course on any specific historical, cultural or literary topic (i.e. Pre-Columbian Art History, Asian American History and Culture, 19th Century Russian Literature, etc.). If you're not sure, ask! I also offer test prep tutoring for all major standardized testing (SAT, ACT, PSAT, GRE, etc.). I offer private voice lessons and acting coaching at a significantly reduced rate. (Why the reduced rate? Because I don't have to spend as much time preparing classes. Most of the work is done in real time.) I am also available for online instruction.

Performance Qualifications:
I instruct/coach the Stanislavsky method and Meisner technique for acting, the Orff Schulwerk system of elementary music, and the Bel Canto method of singing. I am a former undergraduate professor at UNLV Theatre, and I have professional stage, film, and recording credits. My performance / theatrical resume is available on request.

Academic Qualifications:
My SAT scores in 1997 were 790 Verbal 680 Math, using the old 1600 point system. In December 2013, I took the GREs and scored 168 Verbal 162 Math and 5.5 Writing, with no test preparation.

I have always enjoyed tutoring and teaching, and I have a gift for framing material in a way that is accessible to the specific student I am working with. I am comfortable working with people of all ages, from young children to seniors. I am not intimidated by a challenge, and I find working with special needs persons to be especially rewarding.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I have an extensive education in the classics and the humanities. I attended a highly competitive private high school in Honolulu, Hawaii (Punahou) with a strong focus on the humanities, and I continued to study the classics as a matter of personal practice for many years thereafter. I am well-versed in art history, philosophy, Greek theater, mythology, and even Grecian occultism and its effect on classical and modern philosophies. I have also studied Plato and Aristotle, classical aesthetics, classical art theory, and semiotics.

Composition (Music)

I have been a professional musician since 1993, and I am trained in music theory, aural skills, songwriting, and composition. I have a background in western music, Arabic music, jazz, and rock.

Drawing

I have a BFA in Illustration from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. My university was a highly competitive art school with a strong basis in classical fundamentals, balanced by professional training using the most current software and technology. I have a portfolio that is available for view on request.

Ear Training

I have been a professional musician since 1993. I have extensive classical training, including ear training and music theory. I have perfect relative pitch, and near-absolute pitch. I have received perfect or nearly-perfect scores on every aural skills examination I have taken since 9th grade.

General Music

I have been a professional musician since 1993, and I am trained in music theory, aural skills, songwriting, and composition. I have taught and coached both piano and voice for more than 15 years. I have a background in western music, Arabic music, jazz, and rock.

Music History

I studied music at both the University of Southern California and at the Academy of Art University, and my curriculum included a significant amount of music history. Furthermore, I spent many years studying early music, particularly of the Medieval and Renaissance periods. I have taught workshops in early music performance for the past ten years, and am an expert in 15th century Ladino music. I have a background in western music, Arabic music, jazz, and rock. Full resume available upon request.

Sight Singing

I have been sight-singing since I was nine years old, and by the time I was in high school, I could sight-sing a coloratura aria. I studied music at both the University of Southern California and at the Academy of Art University, and my curriculum included music theory, aural skills, songwriting, and composition. I have been a professional musician since 1993, and I have taught and coached both piano and voice for more than 15 years. I have always included sight-reading and sight-singing as a component in my music curricula.

Songwriting

Excellent Voice Teacher

Krishna Alexandra is an excellent voice teacher. She is always positive in her approach, arrives promptly and is prepared. Krishna is patient and thorough with her explanations and is also willing to not only listen to my daughter's (age 11) opinions, but she clearly "hears" what she has to say. I would highly recommend Krishna to anyone who is serious about wanting to improve their vocal skills.
